Simpson is in my opinion the best "off the shelf wood door" available. Jeldwen is a pretty good door it was better when Morgan owned them but they were dumbed down a little in my opinion when they were purchased by Jeldwen. As far as the Aurora F/G door this if I am not mistaken is the IWP doors which were at the time before Jeldwen purchased them shaky at best in my honest opinion and I have seen no evidence in any of the products Jeldwen produces that they are higher quality than under the prior manufacturers.

Lots of factors to be included in the opinion. Things like which direction the door faces. North facing in winter get punished by cold/snow/etc. South facing doors get heat in summer, South facing fiberglas doors have been known to disfigure due to excess heat. Storm doors can help or hinder a doors longevity. Pros of wood doors: Lots of different natural colors. Lots of intricate details possible. Strength is usually high Cons of wood doors: Wood moves with weather(temp and humidity) Wood has to be finished(painting hides the grain. Clear finishes have to be periodically renewed) Wood doors are heavier. Wood door parts can separate due to weather. Real wood doors are much more expensive that clad doors. Fiberglas doors are simply wood cores covered in a fiberglas shell. They can have asimilar look to wood, but have to be painted/stained to have a grain pattern. Like vinyl siding having a texture like wood but the look of plastic. I have steel doors on my house---wood cores with a steel cover.

Check out as many options as you can. We are looking for an exterior door for our kitchen remodel. Since it goes to the back yard and deck we want a full lite door with shades between the glass. Not an easy thing to find. Of course we checked Pella-big bucks. For us, there are actually two different options-exterior door with full lite or single french style patio door. The more I look, the more options I come up with. Check lumber yards, window and door stores and the big box stores. We are also planning to have the exterior trim clad in aluminum so that we don't have the maintainance of wood with a fiberglass door. From what I have heard, it is probably worth the extra charge to have the door factory finished as well, especially if it is fiberglass with a wood look. Haven't ordered anything yet but I think we are getting close to making a decision.

I have a good friend who sells replacement windows and doors and we when we replaced one of our doors last year she told me not to get fiberglass. I ended up with a steel door and I'm happy! I wasn't able to buy a door from her anyway as she lives in a different state. Her comments lead me to believe that the fiberglass just doesn't hold up as well, in the long run. Good Luck! Sue
