Design Dilemma dining room Home Decorating

liquor cabinet, living room dilemma

Hi all,
I really want a small liquor cabinet for under those pictures where the arrow is pointing. I don't want another sideboard, I have a huge dark wood one on the wall with the kitchen door.

What color piece should I get? should I get the same dark wood as all my other furniture? Or maybe a navy to bring in the couches? Or a different color altogether?

Also. what can I add to the living area? a rug? what should I hang on the empty wall opposite the painting?

My taste is transitional. I know there are a lot of traditional pieces here, but I really like clean lines and varying materials...mixed metals, and nothing ornate.

couches are new. light fixtures are new. painting and bookcases are staying as is. pictures must remain in this room. dining set is here for another few years, we may update at a later date.

I would get a glass/ chrome bar cart to put there.

IMO you already have 2 cabinets on that wall that are quite different from eachother and to add another to the mix will be a mess maybe if you could find a buffet in the same wood and color as the bookshelves it might work as a liquor cabinet and BTW I never like family pictures in livingspaces a nice piece of aart hung above the buffet in the DR would be nice addition.

Ok thanks so much. so I'll get a small piece that matched the bookcase wood. thankd!!! I can switch those pics for a large art and move those pics to a smaller wall. It's not family pics. It's inspirational historical people :)

I think your general arrangement will work, although I'd skip the sectional. A sofa and two armchairs will be easier to configure. Another option is to place the TV opposite the fireplace such as this: A portable bar cart in front of the windows to the right of fireplace could work well.

Have you thought about switching rooms? If dining table and piano were in LR, it looks like sofa and two chairs could possibly fit in dining room with room for armoire/tv where China cabinet is now.

Howdy, Looking to replace the old engineered hardwood flooring in my living room. I see some hardwood laminate/luxury vinyl planks that look like good options as I’m looking to DIY. I’d like to go in a different direction from the rest of the home. My kitchen cabinets are a dark brown/espresso color, dining room and office have same espresso colored floors. Can I go lighter in the living room? I like the light grey/beige/taupe colored flooring, will that flow ok? The tile on the main floor is a light beige/gray color scheme. I understand why you wanted to have the bistro table/chairs on the window wall between the patio door and the kitchen passageway….it makes sense to have your dining area adjacent to the kitchen. The open wall at the opposite end is the perfect location for the tv. So swap the sofa and loveseat and anchor them and the cocktail table on the rug (front legs of sofa/loveseat on the rug), so the loveseat will pull in closer to the fireplace, leaving room behind for the dining area and access to the patio door. The square end table could then be placed in the corner between the sofa/loveseat.

any other input on what to add to living room area? How to reapeat the blue on the rest of the room? anyone think adding a magenta color somewhere would. fit? in rugs, pillows, curtains...?

Is this the entire living room area? If there is another one, I would not use this small space as such. Either way, I'd hang curtains above that window and leave the shutters open. I agree - no family photos in DR - only oil or pastel portraits (these are traditional).

Crate and Barrel has an awesome one that closes and you don't really see all of the mess. It also comes in black.

@anglophilia what color curtains? what would you hang over the other couch?

It's not the only living area, but it's where everyone loves to hang out and the amount of seating really works for us.....the other living area is half a flight down, more like family room/den, more casual with big leather couches

@laurafhallon @Kathi steele. Thanks so so much for the suggestion and link, but I don't want to see the mess in glass and the CB cart is totally my taste but it would never hold the amount of scotch etc bottles DH needs to 'collect

I was afraid it's too much dark wood, and that another color would be a mess...any brilliant ideas out there?

I could rearrange furniture of necessary....
