Unfortunately, lgmd, they do...drills for sheltering in in case of gun violence. And the problem is the odds of needing those drills today are a lot higher than they were for nuclear attack in the 50s.

Lgmd, I’m not certain all the schools do it, but because we have occasional tornado warnings, some do tornado drills but they involve the kids going to designated areas in a group. Similar positions should be taken if an actual hit should occur.

In the Government building where I worked, we also had tornado drills and evacuation drills. During tornado warnings that was one time I felt very safe working in the basement in a fortified room with no windows.

lgmd and anyone else who is interested: at DD's school, they do 3 different types of drills regularly- fire drills, lock-down drills, and earthquake drills. We just did the Great Shake Out a few weeks ago for earthquake preparedness, which involved the children evacuating to designated locations, and parents arriving early, filling out minimal paperwork, and collecting their children. Some may see these things as sad, but they really are a good opportunity for preparedness.

Annie, that Georgia O'Keefe painting is stunning!! I really like her work. It reminded me that I have a poster that I framed in the 1980s. It's in my basement because it is 46" x 34", too large for my home now. It has an oak frame because my dining room furniture was oak. Now I just don't have the wall space for it. :( I went to a gallery that was showing her work. My photo doesn't do it justice.

Do you mean the location of the mural, Jim? It's in Eureka on the N. California coast. The day we were there was during an "Arts Alive" event and many murals were being painted on the sides of buildings. It was fascinating to watch the artists at work.

Glenda I grew up in ND on a farm that had a big barn like that. It was 2 levels with the hay and ground feed in the upper level. I spent many years milking cows in it and painting it red every few years. It burned down a few years after I left the farm. I have a thing about red barns too. I also like the old windmills.
