Why is giving away seeds so difficult
Comments (12)This may be a minor issue for some traders, but better IDs (scientific names for more exact specification) might help. "Quince" for instance could be one of the species in the Chaenomeles genus, Pseudocydonia sinensis, or maybe even Aegle marmelos. Also, some plants don't come true from seed. So seed from Lagerstroemia indica 'Whit VII' (Siren Red Crape Myrtle) do not produce Siren Red Crape Myrtles! They are simply plain Lagerstroemia indica. If the seeds are from a real Siren Red Crape, as opposed to a seedling you grew, then you could mention that the seeds came from Siren Red (but they wouldn't be Siren Red). Whether or not these types of issues really make a lot of difference when it comes to your average GardenWeb seed trader, I don't know. I've offered things that were semi-rare before, that I expected people to want, and got zero interest. I've also posted stuff that was so common you could probably just go out in the yard and grab some anywhere, and people wanted it. Sometimes these things just aren't meant for us to understand. And, BTW, I don't know the specifics regarding the lady that wanted to specify how you'd send the seeds, but, if it was in regards to packaging, seeds that are not protected during shipment are frequently a complete loss. IF that was the request, I don't really blame her (depending on how she asked of course). I would have no interest in getting seeds mailed to me in a plain envelope, even if they were seeds I had been looking for for a long time....See MoreStrike two... suggestions please for really difficult spot
Comments (3)Hi there, I'd think something with a yellow bloom or yellow foliage or a variegated yellow-leaved plant would be an excellent addition to your color scheme. I guess, hence your try of the Kerria japonica... Something purple would also be stiking as would a trellis of Clematis that blooms early fall and repeats again in the fall. Or a very long bloomer of Clematis in the species viticella group. Plants I would consider for your climate: Clematis 'Blue Moon' Clematis viticella 'Venosa Violacea' Clematis viticella 'Etiole Violet' Clematis 'My Angel' for it's very soft blue foliage and yellow nodding blooms in spring and fall. Physocarpus opulifolius 'Monlo'/'Diablo' Ginkgo biloba 'Jade Butterflies' - That's my pick for a shrub. A Clematis Trellis however would look excellent too. Juniperus chinensis 'Aurea' Cotinus coggygria cultivars Dax...See MoreMom in our home - really difficult
Comments (11)My mother moved into a nice assisted living facility about a year and a half ago. She was resigned but angry and resentful at first though she knew she needed more care than she could expect living at home. She accepted it after we went to lunch there a couple of times, toured the facility and saw her apartment, and everyone was so friendly to her. I think she likes it now though she wouldn't admit it. She likes the regular meals, the attention, and some of the activities. She acts snobby about the other residents, but I think she has made some friends there. Her physical health definitely has improved. Recently she went from pathetically demanding more visits to refusing a lunch out with us in favor of the afternoon's activities at the AL facility: lunch, a party, and bingo. I saw this as a major step forward. She has her little dog living with her and she enjoys the attention he gets as well. They have a trick that amuses whoever is watching. The dog knows the way down the hall and out the door when he goes for his walks. She says "Turn left, Edgar. Now turn right. Left again, Edgar," and he trots along as if he is obeying her. Very cute. If she were alone at home, she would miss out on a lot. I think the key is to find a facility that looks attractive, with pretty grounds, and where the staff is friendly. Besides being nicer for the mother, this situation is so much more desirable to visitors who might be reluctant to visit a very depressing place. My mother's place looks like a pleasant hotel, and in fact it is run by a major hotel chain....See MoreWhite grout - is it really that difficult to care for?
Comments (7)sealitsealitsealit When we bought our house 3 years ago it had been done up with a new bathroom tile floor and new tile counters. N00b dufus that I was, I didn't know anything about sealers. When we ripped that %$*(_!#&&!@# counter out, the grout was DISGUSTING. There was absolutely no way to keep it clean. The bathroom floor is almost as bad. A few months back when I read of sealers I tried to scrub it in preparation, and I STILL don't know what to do with it because I could.not.get.it.clean.. (Slightly OT, is there a way to darken it in situ, or do I have to rip it out and start again?) Anyway, just my 2c. When we installed our kitchen, I was ADAMANT that it would be dark grout with the tile. I don't care if it's not fashionable, I am NOT going with light grout again.
