Mold in AC Unit? What is that Smell?!

After some recent rain in the Phoenix area, there was a strong smell of wet wood in our home, primarily in our MBR which is closest to the air handler. The smell dissipated until it rained heavily again and the smell returned. It was so bad, I had to sleep with my head under the covers for several nights. My husband couldn't find any leaks in the attic. The AC drain pan, in the attic, was empty. We had a mold expert test the air in our MBR for mold spores, but by that time, the smell was hardly noticeable. He didn't find any evidence of mold, but what else could the smell be? My husband thinks it's just a humid attic smell. I'm not convinced. The mold guy suggests we have our ductwork cleaned, but we had that done last year, unless it wasn't done properly. He swabbed the opening of a few vents and found them to be dusty. Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on? What else can I do to find and get rid of the source of this odor?
