Pleiospilos nelii question
Comments (1)I have three P. nelii plants, one of them bloomed last month, the other 2 have buds right now. It clearly prefers a fall/ winter/ spring growing and blooming period. This does differ from the other Pleiospilos species which will take watering and will grow during the summer. They are highly drought tolerant and will survive well even if lightly watered all year long. However, if you want flowers, you have to figure out when they are most active for you and during this period water more regularly. For me, I water my P. nelii more frequently beginning around September when the nights cool down, until they are done flowering which can be as late as March/ April. x...See MorePleiospilos nelii repotting
Comments (5)No need to sterilize garden loam/ soil - it's unlikely that anything harmful will survive. I've used garden soil for mesemb seeds without a problem. Algae is the biggest enemy, and algae spores are everywhere. Fresh air works wonders! Decent garden soil in a 1:4 ratio with perlite will suffice - just be careful that it doesn't get too soggy, depending on the clay content. Make sure to use a deep pot - like 4-6+ inches. Pleiospilos have deeper roots than most mesembs. It's nearly impossible to find something that tall and also narrow. Those ugly red plastic beer/ party cups are a good size! Throw some chunks of rock into the pot to reduce soil volume a little. x...See MorePleiospilos, cot and and caudiform
Comments (10)That's a beautiful crib, but please, please be careful...about ten years ago a lady in my apartments had a really old crib like that too from several generations in her family and her baby got really hurt and was flown to the children's hospital (and the baby was in the parent's bedroom just inches away from where the parents where sleeping) and was in the hospital for quite a while. The space between the bars is suppose to be a certain distance apart. Anyways, love the desert rose, I had one bloom on mine with many more to come so I stuck it outside in deep shade for a few hours each day (was trying to get it use to being outside)and the buds fell off, I just find it hard to beleive that it prefered the dark corner inside my house then the shade outside..... -FPT...See MoreLithops Q & Pleiospilos nelii (split rock) rot or sun burn?
Comments (12)It liiiiives!! Cutting off the rot worked wonderfully. But I think the "surgery" worked in my favor because I spotted the rot almost immediately. Its doing just fine now, it's even sprouting new leaves! I took pictues of the rot and the "surgery" if anyone is interested. Eventually, new leaves will replace the old and it will look like nothing ever happened....See MoreStefan
