Exterior Paint Design Dilemma

can't decide on exterior color

Hello, we'd like to paint the exterior of our little cottage/craftsman home but can't decide on the color combo. We want something dark, thinking charcoal or black on dark navy blue or black trim. Any recommendation? We want to contemporarize the look of this house.

Contemporize? I guess it’s kind of like modernize. :)
When picking paint colors, keep your fixed elements in mind (roof, hardscape, etc). I can’t see your roof, but your concrete is orange and there is a lot of it. It plays really well with the current warm color. Going to a cool color may not look as nice. Test the paint on large boards that you can move around the house and hold near the roof and near the landscaping.

I think a navy would be really beautiful with white trim. Blue and orange are pretty together (my school colors). ;-) Ocean and sunset...

Are you wanting to stick with just siding or are you thinking about introducing another material such as stone or brick? Are you doing vinyl siding or cement board? What sort of colors do YOU guys like? Blues, greens browns? You couldnt go wrong with a medium blue gray as the field color, accenting with possibly shake style gable siding in a color such as brown, and maybe introducing a cream colored limestone veneer on the front bumped out section? Creamy white trim and windows would set it off nicely. Select a nice brown stained mahogany style door. That is just my quick suggestion :)

I think white would look beautiful! Do this. Prime it white. See if you love it. If not....try something else. But I think white would be striking! Your landscaping will add green...and your deck furniture, etc. will add color, too. Good luck! Beautiful home!

Rachel, use the same roofing on your garage as the house. If you dont blend your new garage into what you have on the house, its not going to look like it belongs with your house on your property. Try to have siding, and roofing, and windows, all as close to the house as your can.

Angela Burton - I can't believe you picked that color. I had not read this thread previously and was going through it, and was going to suggest that exact color! My brother has a new home in the mountains that is exactly that color scheme and it looks beautiful - all year long. But it is completely stunning in the winter with snow on the ground. Your home looks awesome - good choice!

I agree with doing something with more color in it. Right now everything is so light that features of the home don't stand out. You could go dark with the main house color and stay light with the trim, do the reverse of that or fall somewhere in between. Craftsman style houses very often used earthy tones (like what Beverly showed). That's not saying the blues won't work but a lot of that depends on what direction you want to take and your color preferences.

I think you need to keep in mind that this is not a contemporary style home.

Congrats on a sweet home!! I agree with all said before. Especially Beverly with the choice of green, the color stays within the craftsman style, but most importantly gets away from the gray shade (trendy & nice but so 2016.) I would paint the porch peak a shade lighter color , pillars too (but the pillar base the same darker color of the house. all trim to remain as is. bright color squat fat pots on the graduated step side, bright blue in color (chartreuse/purple/burgundy elephant ear plants) and a burgundy front door. a hanging lantern in the porch if you have the clearance, can't tell by the picture. Your home is great but don't try to turn it into something it is not.
