Who else is trying to decide between Culinarian and Blue Star?
Comments (95)I understand that the oven door on older versions of the BlueStar RNB could get quite warm (I've heard this described as "very warm" and "surprisingly warm" by two personally-known owners and in various ways by folks posting on the internet). My range is from this spring, 2011 -- I wouldn't say notably warm for either the door or the knobs. I can place my hand flat on the oven door, while the oven's in action, without any discomfort -- half a second, ten seconds, it just doesn't matter. It's not hot. Three kids and two small dogs and it's a non-issue. The culinarian is probably a very fine product -- certainly the specs look good and far be it from me to dispute anybody's happiness with his or her purchase. Folks should keep in mind that problems and praise for that range or any other on this board -- for all of this board's virtues -- represent a very small number of reports that may be more or less representative (or wildly unrepresentative) of the larger universe of consumer experience. With the culinarian, especially, we're talking about a very small number of reports on a fairly new product. Reported problems have not been many, but they have not been zero. Reports on Trevor's interventions have been very, very favorable, but not everybody has been instantly pleased by the company itself. I really don't mean to suggest that there are any major problems with the product or the company -- not at all. And for any particular person, for all I know, this may be an excellent choice -- maybe the best one possible. But surely folks know that the record is limited?...See MoreTrying to decide on paint color for kitchen/living cherry wood
Comments (2)Take a look at BM Affinity Meditation. It is a grayish olive. It's working perfectly with my cork floor (Eco Cook in Toledo) which is a fairly deep orange, my beech butcher block countertops and cabinets in BM White Dove. I also had my heart set on a grayish blue but I couldn't find one that didn't clash with all those warm wood tones. Very happy with the Meditation....See MoreLongevity of Grays? Trying to decide...
Comments (34)Well, I've gone completely off in the other direction! Our living areas are currently painted in BM Rattan - I love the color. However, everything I buy has to coordinate with this and it leaves me stifled. I'm going back to what I've always loved which is what we had in our 1929 Spanish bungalow in San Diego. Our former home - 1929 Spanish Bungalow Living Room & Dining area adjacent to living room. It was very much a work in progress then and we had to many plans but ended up moving out of state to be closer to family. Our current house is a cookie cutter brick in a master-planned community and I've resisted trying to make it what I truly want because the house architecture doesn't really lend itself to Spanish bungalow. But, I've been unhappy with everything else so as babbs50 above suggested, I'm going to go with my heart. Went and picked up a sample of Mascarpone and I love it. When I finally get around to starting this project, I will post!...See MoreNeed help deciding wood floor colors to go with new wood looking tile
Comments (35)The hardwoods are extremely valuable. I would work in a medium brown that eliminates all yellow/orange/red. To do that, the stain will have to have a green undertone. That means a specialized mix for your situation. A HIGH END hardwood flooring professional can do this for you. It will take a couple of weeks to find the right colour/mix. The professional will come in and strip a section of flooring (like 20ft x 20ft). S/he will then apply different stain mixes to this area for you to view. You will then choose the colour that is the best fit for your situation. At a mutually agreeable time, the professional will come in and refinish the entire house - including the stairs (quite expensive but well worth it). The banister can then be stained/painted to match the hardwoods. The only time I would look at moving away from hardwood is in the DEEP south or in very hot climates. And it would be VERY helpful if the entire house was built on concrete and not wood joists. Tile is very heavy. It often requires wooden subfloors to be beefed up (decrease the deflection rating = no movement that would damage the tile). The wood is worth saving - unless you absolutely hate it (disregard the colour). If you love tile and wish to have it everywhere, then go for it. But realize that hot climates are some of the few places where this is considered normal. Everywhere else (any place with "winter") would find this a nuisance should you wish to sell the home. Besides, you mentioned budget. Ripping out the hardwood and replacing with tile would be double the cost of refinishing the hardwoods....See MoreLaura Mac
