Design Dilemma Building a Home Exterior

Gable brackets and front door stain help!!!

We are building a new home. Craftsman style bungalow.
The exterior siding is Boulder Gray(siding is Manor in the 3d photo) Stone is Echo ridge fieldstone(3d photo doenst show color well)
My husband insisted on Mohogany garage doors, so they are ordered.
We will be putting in gable brackets as shown in photo, but will have a slight curve in them.
The front porch posts will be white tapered posts.

My dilemma is, I really wanted the gables and front door stained like attached photo( dark walnut/jacobean). Builder says stain to match garage doors!

Our interior flooring is an espresso/darkwalnut vinyl plank. Dark stained Island. White cabinets and trim. Have ceiling beams that will be stained dark like island.

i don't think staining the gables the dark color will work, but neither will be staining them the garage door color. I would keep them the same color as the house- the texture alone will be enough of a difference, also the porch posts the same mahogany color.

Kay has a point. I think since you have the mahogany doors, I would just let them stand as they are. Paint the gable trim the same color as the siding that they are in front of.

Stain the porch posts like the garage doors, and maybe the front door also, if you don't have it painted already, and call it good. With the Mahogany on the exterior only, it will give warmth and color to your landscape too, and your house..

Than let your Jacobean shine inside. Painting the trim in the eaves light gray, will be easier to maintain than staining so high off the ground in years to come. Your home will be lovely, and that way your Mahogany makes a statement at the entrances of the home, and it will make your home very special..

Try wiping a small area with mineral spirits to simulate what the door will look like with a fresh coat. If you need to add color, you might look at gel stains. They do not need to soak into bare wood like oil- or water-based stains do. But you will want to at least rough up the areas to get a dull base and remove any UV damaged old finish. And for me, there is not even a question, I'd remove the door to work on it. And another study that talks briefly about marine varnishes http://www.askhlm.com/Articles/ArticleViewPage/tabid/75/ArticleId/26/Paint-On-A-Clear-Finish.aspx And, by the way, Minwax Helmsman is not in the same class as the real marine varnishes. Poly just has very limited UV resistance. It was the so-called spar urethane used in the first article.

Here is the front elevation of our new home. I don't mind that it's quite plain and simple but wondered if matching brackets at the peak of the house and garage would add to the curb appeal? I don't want "gingerbread". Thinking something very simple or nothing. The front door is a "shaker" style door with a small window (not reflected in this rendering). The light fixture I am planning to use above the garage is a large gooseneck "barn" light. The light fixture at the man door will be something smaller and matching or complimentary. The home is on a large lot in a country setting at the outskirts of historical St. Andrews by the sea, New Brunswick, Canada.

As an aside that rather applies to ALL these discussions of "Why can't I *fill in the blank*?" I was listening to an audiobook by Anthony Esolen, and he segues briefly into architecture as it applies to the broader culture. "...taking a plan from one, design from another, and details from a third, you must blend them chemically, as it were, thereby making a new thing. Not mechanically, as a bad patchwork." No brackets - they would be a patch stitched onto the knee of your new suit.

agree, garage only. that has a very large 'forehead' space. I think an addition there would look great. (you're pruning some of those shrubs and grasses, yes? from the angle of the photo, it competes w/the look of the house. You did a very nice job redoing that, btw. you could always add a window, maybe an arbor

Are your garage doors prefinished? Mahogany is a type of wood, not a color, but your builder is correct -- all exterior stained wood should match.

They are manufactured wood grain doors. Amarr.
I think we will do the gable brackets to match the garage door. Maybe just have the front door slightly darker?

The front posts are already being built as white tapered craftsman posts, to go with all of the white trim..

Please don't call this a craftsman house. It's not. Adding gable brackets and "craftsman" posts doesn't make it a craftsman when nothing else on the house says it.

Personally if you're going to put the gable brackets on ( I wouldn't as it doesn't add to the house), I would also add one over the porch gable.
