Help with fixing bulging drywall seams
Comments (14)Absolutely it is in British Columbia. I don't know for sure if it's code, but it's absolutely standard practice in stairwells (usually the only place where you get your whole two floors height in one wall. I'm an alarm technician, and I see it (the gap and the trim that covers it) in every new house. Mine has the same bulge at the seam at the level of the upper floor, because it was built before that trick was introduced. I assume it's not a rule in the US since nobody seems to know about it, but it's standard here, and it WILL fix the OP's problem (assuming it's only one seam, but if it's several, once the gap is introduced, the others can probably be fixed.) What 'framing' would fix it, in your opinion? Clearly it's downward pressure. Sure, a heavier point load may have reduced the effect, but the direction of pressure certainly appears to be downwards. I guess that's why we leave a 3/8" gap at the bottom of a wall....See MoreHow to fix 1" gaps in drywall seams?
Comments (14)Just my opinion, but if the drywall is solidly attached to the studs and isn't flexing and doesn't move when you push it, then I would assume that any settling is done and nothing is going to move. I would finish the walls and see what happens. By the way, there is a comment on the other thread about first filling in the gaps with some expansion foam and/or pre-caulk filler rope. That might be a good idea since it it an outside wall. Also, there is a professional drywallers site with forums called drywalltalk.com. They might have opinions on whether this is just crummy installation or structural movement....See MoreCan Quartz seams be fixed?
Comments (4)Abby: Hopefully you owe him money. When he realizes that he's not getting paid until it's fixed, he'll probably bite the proverbial bullet and get it right. Make him aware that he's getting one chance. If he blows it, you'll hire someone else with the money you owe him. Dealing with some "contractors" is a lot like dealing with teenagers. You're teaching them lessons that will be really helpful in their future....See MoreQuartz Seam Jagged; Told: "it's the best we could do"
Comments (32)If you've not yet paid, don't -- demand it be fixed to your satisfaction. Put your complaint in writing to the person billing you for this, send it via tracked certified mail, return receipt requested -- and do keep a copy of it. If it is not resolved to your satisfaction in a timely way, you could contact the BBB, sending them copies of that correspondence with pictures and any information about the reply. Contacting the BBB might not get you any resolution to your issues, but forewarning someone else could give you some satisfaction. If the contractor is especially obnoxious and unprofessional and unconcerned, you might find out if some local radio and/or tv stations do stories on how bad a local consumer has been treated. Well deserved bad publicity has the potential to lose them more money than it would have cost them to resolve your issues....See Morewhaas_5a
