Heat source for seed starting
Comments (6)Lights are a good source of heat. Here in Texas when we expect a freeze that could kill some tender plants we wrap a cage around that plant using what ever kind of structure that will surround and cover the plant most wrap this with plastic being sure it does not touch the plant. We place lights inside the structure for the heat source creating a small greenhouse. I am finding uses for those empty plastic milk cartons. By cutting the bottoms our and placing them over plants such as tomatoes as they stop producing as soon as it hits 95 which comes too soon in our area. I have also started to cut a hole in the bottoms of those plastic ice cream containers, leaving a flap which can be closed at night if the temps will drop too low for good growth. I am also thinking about maybe using other small white frosted containers for seed starting here in our area with a hole cut on the bottom for venting during warm days to prevent too much moisture build up. Comments (7)Mine isn't all that new, probably 10 years old. Kinda ugly, I just replaced the knob on the lid with one for a kitchen drawer. It is a Rival brand, oval shaped, I forgot the capacity. But it is big enough to put a whole turkey breast inside. It has 3 settings High will boil, low will slow cook, and it has a warm setting that is perfect eating temp. Speaking of turkey breast, I partially thaw a turkey breast in the fridge overnight , about 18 hours usually. Put it in the crock pot the next morning with the cavity up. Comments (5)I don't really have recipes for the crockpot, but one of our favorites is roast, potatoes, carrots. Chop a medium onion into about 1/2 or 3/4 inch pieces and put in bottom of crockpot. Place raw roast in crockpot on top of onions. Wash and peel carrots, slice into large pieces (about 3 inches long). Wash potatoes (we prefer red or yellow varieties), do not peel. Place carrots and potatoes on and around the roast. Pour beef broth, water, tomato juice or apple cider over all (so it's about half or a little more full of liquid), put the lid on and set to low. Cook 6-8 hours. You don't want the liquid TOO full because the meat will release more and raise the level. There's nothing like starting this in the morning and coming home from work and dinner is ready! The house smells wonderful when you open the door! You can also put all the ingredients for stew in the pot raw and turn it on! Cook a meaty ham bone, then remove all the meat and bone from the broth and put the crockpot in the fridge over night so the fat congeals on top. The next day, remove the fat, put the meat back in with some beans and veggies and if cooked on high, you'll have bean soup in about 4 hours. You can put a frozen pork roast in there, dump BBQ sauce over it (no extra water) and cook on low all day. Shred the meat and serve Pulled Pork sandwiches! Also try Googling Crockpot Recipes for Two. You should get lots of ideas. You'll want to determine what size yours is so you can adjust recipes if needed. Lots of them are designed for a 6 quart pot, so you may need to halve them.
