Before buying online you may want to go to a rug store to see the various styles and colors available. My rugs are wool and have worn extremely well.

I think Bonnie gave excellent advice, my rugs are wool and I like them much more than the other types of rugs I have had in the past. I think it is worthwhile buying a quality rug pad.

I also like her idea of going to see a rug 'in person' prior to buying. Several rugs I have bought online have seemed different when received than the color I saw on my computer monitor. Some rug stores have free returns though.

Try Neiman Marcus. That chair fabric is beautiful, and I like the tables. I am sitting on Theodor Alexander chairs that are about 20 years old, so it holds up well!

Would the chairs with the contrasting fabrics be used as is? Can you show a pic with them and the fabric?

Are the bookshelves built in? Are they and the walls/trim staying the same color?

Is the new fabric your color scheme?

Good idea about esale rugs. I have used them before. To answer other questions, the bookcases are built-in and we generally like the color of the walls and trim. (Translation: we have already spent a small fortune and can live with it.)The fabric chair ( The one from the swatch) will not be on the rug. It will be by the French door s have its own designated lamp and table and I see it as a separate reading area. Plus the couch and other chair are big enough for Anyone who will be watching TV. The other two chairs that I already have flank the TV and are across the room from the bookshelves. They too will not be on the rug.

I was thinking about this last night. If I could find the right color tone that works with the floors and the leather, I would get a natural looking rug or a subtle check or tweed. Then I would splurge and get really fabulous print pillows.

It looks like the rug will need to be really large, I would consider getting a length of carpet and having it bound.

This subtle check is nice and comes in many color choices.

Great idea about considering carpet and cutting it down. I’ve been trying to find a patterned rug on esale but I realize that might not be the place to do it. (I grew up in a house that had a library with a plaid rug and I think I’m trying to recreate the look. But don’t worry, I know I can’t do plaid with that fabric. Off to a carpet store later today! I was thinking along the same lines as d_gw. A tone on tone pattern or perhaps a seagrass rug with blue welting could work. I love all your furniture- plus the room is drop-dead-gorgeous.

I had a huge lr in one of my prior homes that really required a “palace” size rug. It was a temporary home for me so no desire to invest in an expensive rug. I did just what was recommended above — a bound carpet in the size I needed neutral in a fawn ivory color. (though I love texture and pattern. I think a tonal herringbone or even your plaid would be lovely but not overpower) then splurge on gorgeous pillows and such I also layered some smaller rugs in a desk area and door entrances (my huge room had5 doors — two of which went outdoors)

Very nice home Jojoco! I looked but didn't have any luck. I did see lots of rugs with some of the bookcase shade, some lighter shades and blues and in a pattern that would work. The problem I had is that the blues in the rugs were off. They were blues that had a tic of teal. Not teal but leaning that way.

What's nice about Oriental patterns is that the colors don't have to be exact and the pattern can help the eye blend everything together. If you get something that reads solid the tone and color really have to be spot on.

Okay, I am definitely channelling the home of my childhood. Would any of these plaids work? Or should I just move on.

I love the cocoa plaid and think the blue in it would work wonderfully. My one concern, which I don't think matters at all, but just in case, is that it is a very cozy, library look and your room is quite bright and airy.

Oh Dw and Rita, those are both really pretty options. I do love how the cocoa one looks. I'm surprising myself at how much I love the antelope too, but still leaning more towards plaids. Meanwhile, while you were being awesome decorators, I was finding two more. Thoughts?

We both wrote at the same time. I like both new rugs you posted, though I like the top one a little bit more. I think the smaller blue checks might be too much over a large span.

Rita, I agree. Also, I think the blue in the small pattern may read too baby blue.

I like the plaid with the blue a great deal, though I think I prefer the tone-on-tone a little more. My thinking is the plainer color on the floor lets the armchair and eventual pillows stand out more.

I would not get any looped rugs with pets.

Because of the cat, we are doing all super short velvet cut pile rugs which are hard to find except in 100% wool or commercial grade carpet. So we are doing either wool or commercial grade broadloom and having them cut and bound with matching serging.

Pets claws can get snagged in loop pile and they will either pull the loop out or could damage their claws. Their collars can also snag the loops. We had wool berber type carpet in one apartment and the owners after me pulled out an entire section of pile by catching it on a piece of furniture or something. That's kinda turned me off to anything but tufted or Axeminster cut pile.

I might be in the minority but I think the plaids lack the wow factor that room deserves. The P.O. had a beautiful look going in that room, one which you seek to emulate with your furniture choices. There are so many beautiful rugs With pattern, color and vitality, either in a look similar to the P.O. or in a different color/pattern.

great point, pampliset. Our two dogs tear around this house (Until I yell at them to stop). So I'm back to the cocoa. But Bonnie, you have definitely given me pause. I do love the look of the orientals. And as far as coziness goes, we also have a library with a fireplace, two damask tan arm chairs and a butler's table. Ironically, that rug is a blue and tan oriental, but way too small for a great room.

Pal raises a good point about looped rugs with pets. Wool orientals are iIndestructible. Numerous dogs, cats and 3 kids have not hurt mine.

How about a navy blue oriental? That way you are not trying to coordinate the lighter shade of blue.

I would prefer something more floral since you already have a tribal pattern on the arm chair.

Just came back from a carpet store. I’m partial to this one, but I also realize it’s my first stop. The size would be 9‘3“ by 12‘9“. That works. It’s 100% wool and is only $549. That’s insanely cheap for a 100% wool rug, but the salesman called to doublecheck. It is by Nourison.

I’m a fan, but not sure what my DH will think. Almost every rug in this hous—correction every rug in this house, is an oriental.

I think the colors work on the plaid, but i don't think the mood works IYKWIM.

I did look at the antelope at the store. I took a big square of it and put the fabric next to it. I like the look, but I don’t like the long brown line repeating in a large room. It becomes very stripey. . I love it as a runner or on stairs, but not for a large room. I showed DH the picture of the one with the squares and he said he it might work but it is “hard to tell from the picture.” mtn, I know what you mean about the mood, but I’m also drawn to the brown with the woodwork.

I agree that the antelope is very stripey, as is, for example, cheetah. I also feel like some of the animal prints can edge toward more of modern (?) look, which runs counter to the furniture you have. I like the Landry & Arcari carpets (plaid), but you know your pets habits.

Yes, it is gorge on stairs. I have it in a smallish guest room and it doesn't read stripey, but in a larger space I would want to see a mock up to get a feel.

Make it as big as possible so there's plenty of room to walk, because those table legs are real trip hazards. make sure you can give them wide berth. I know they're bought and ordered, but I'd send them back.

Oh goodness me. I would never think of such a thing, and Jojo isn't outfitting a senior citizens center. I'm sure it'll be fine. I think it can be tiresome when the OP lays out the items that are given/fixed and people comment anyway!

The splayed appearance of the legs may be somewhat of an optical illusion as they curve inward.

I really love those rugs you posted, Jo, the ones with the large check pattern. Something about them just seems right with the feel of the room. You have a lot of angles in the room, then that big arch, wood, and then a lot of curvy (slightly) furniture, so I think it will look great and give you a casual feel. Yes, hard to tell until it’s all put together, but I think your instincts are good! And you know those 2 dogs are going to claim them.
