1966 Split Level Update
We are brainstorming creative ways to update this 60's split level. Ideally, we would like to work with the yellow brick, but we are open to painting it. The stone around the front door is a particular challenge. We welcome your ideas, color palettes, and landscaping suggestions!

Comments (6)Its hard to tell by your pictures, which are a bit blurry and a bit small, but, is that exterior stained? If so, I would get it cleaned and a fresh coat of stain, since I do like the colors on there right now. I am the exception here, I guess, because, I do think those reddish shutters add a lot to the house. Comments (11)You don't have room for seating or any enlarged area next to your driveway. To update your home, remove the bushes that are growing above your windows, and add some landscaping further away from the house. I'd also try to minimize the number of hcolors you have on the house. The stone and brick are fine, but the combination of grey above the windows, yellow siding, and brown garage are all fighting against each other. I agree with everyone that a good deal of landscaping in front is a must and would go a long way towards adding curb appeal to the front of the home. Beverly- what if I have the budget to change the entire level of the roof over the single story part of the home? I was thinking I could do a dramatic higher A-pitch style roof to add visual interest and also enable the addition of a long front porch? We just keep envisioning a french country exterior and we will do what we can (within reason- not going the entire value of the house) to get that look. Changing the roof line (to either an A pitch or a multiple "peak" look) would also give the appearance of a larger home and also allow us to raise the ceiling heights in the main living area of the home - i.e., opening up the entire kitchen and living room to each other as well). Comments (15)It's hard to tell from the photo what shade of cream your house really is, it looks almost white so depending on the cream, the scheme below might work, on the sketch it's white with black trim, black windows and doors. I find the shingles a bit busy and show below the same style in shades of grey. You'd have a more modern look without the shutters but I find the shutters enlarge the windows that otherwise would look a bit lost in the space. I suggest you cut down the shrubs along the porch so that we can see the house and porch. Some flowering perennials along the house on the left would be nice as would a short boxwood hedge in front of the porch....See More

5 years agoI don't find the brick color/pattern offensive and therefore would not paint it. I don't care for the stone colors/pattern so would paint it.
That is a funky weird detail how the pediment of the garage extends downward to the door. I'd explore ways to get rid of it.
The worst thing about the house is that the entrance is tucked far back and made unappealing. The garage door is "front and center" so needs to be a better looking door ... one with a bank of rectangular windows across its top would be a starting point.
In order to make the entrance more inviting, you do need to make a walk to it that is inviting, but to run it all the way to the street when there is a major path (the driveway) already in place seems redundant and wasteful. If you were to do it and submit a fresh photo, people would likely tell you that you have too much paving and need to remove some of it!

Thank you for the suggestions! I like the idea of removing the sidewalk from the street to the porch and replacing it with a walk from the driveway or with large (rectangular) cast in place pavers with space between each paver . The placement of a tree to the right of the upper window creates a nice balance.
I really dislike the stone around the front door. Dry stacked horizontal stone could be an option. Thoughts on using a horizontal wood facade around the door? Maybe repeat this element with a low horizontal wood focal fence in front of the brick to the left of the door?
Mid century modern is hugely popular in our area. The yellow brick is once again being used in new construction - we are seeing it combined with charcoal gray and deep blue. We are considering this bold combination if we can get the balance of each color block correct.

Ignore the garden and path. I just gave you mulch on the left side.
That stone needs to go.
I would move the door to the left side of the rough opening. It seems more centered that way. I put one sidelight on the right side. If you really like the MCM look the sidelight could be glass blocks.
I am surprised to find I disagree with Yardvaark. I like the gable shape above the garage. I think it looks like the stealth bomber.
