Hi PUGlvr1, First, just wanted to say I've read many of your posts and have enjoyed them. I guess everything is relative. Here in Las Vegas, we started hitting 100 in May31. Today, we hit 107, humidity is 8%. What? it ain't summer yet? :-) Needless to say, by this time of the year, almost all my jades go indoors or under the porch. They're mostly outdoors during winter, save a day or two when night temps go below freezing. The opposite of what most folks do. What can I say - Vegas has nice temps in the winter. Humid in Vegas is 25%. I would imagine with your higher humidity, even temps in the 90's could push the heat index well above 100. My next door neighbor, who owns a landscape company, caught me many years ago watering my plants (potted, in-ground, and grass) at high noon, on the hottest day of July. I did this because I thought it helps cool the plants off. He said I should not do this because any water that splatters on it's leaves, even on grass blades, would get hot to the point that it could damage leaves, burn spots, and/or wilt the plant. Luckily, I only did minor damage to one gollum. To date, the brown spots on it's otherwise healthy leaves still show the scars. So now, I water outdoor plants very early in the morning or when the sun has shaded the plants. I wonder if when jades are subjected to very high humidity (isn't 100% humidity called rain?) baking in the full sun, if that does some damage to it's leaves, exactly as if you watered the leaves while in full/esposed sun/heat? -sutremaine- I agree with your statement "If you want a Jade that can take full sun you'll have to make a new one from a leaf so that the growth it puts on is created with full sun tolerance". As an experiment and because I have never done so before, I took a crassula leaf and a few small gollum tips, and dropped them into an outdoor pot last summer. The pot gets full sun all day, all year, no special treatment. This year, even watered them when they're completely sun-baked (leaves and all, as you can see from the water spots). And here they are! I suspect these would be my toughest jades (winter or summer). The only downside is I have to water them every other day now. By July, it'll be everyday. But they're not even red! :-)

You can keep them in that container, but you're going to have to be a lot more careful than you would in a more traditional environment. A couple things. - Pink isn't always bad! Quite a few succulents can develop a pink tint around the outer rim of their leaves when they get a lot of sun, however, be careful of beige, brown, black, grey, etc.. The difference between a healthy and happy pink and an unhappy color is pretty obvious when you see it. - The rocks are a dicey move. To keep the container I'd recommend switching the soil to a well draining cactus soil and mixing in some of those small rocks to give it extra drainage. Without a drainage hole in the bottom you're going to have to be extremely careful to not over water, too. - Like Lena said, succulents need really good drainage and air circulation, otherwise they're going to rot. These plants are built to survive droughts (but they are not cacti - under watering can cause harm as well). The way they do this is they suck up and store all the water they possibly can. Too much water means they will bloat up until they pretty much turn to jelly and die. If you lived in an arid environment and payed very close attention to these guys, you could get away with this container, but still probably not worth the headache. - That container is great for other things! Especially if you really like the rocks you could consider putting a big air plant in there (as long as you're good with regular care). While it can be done like this, wouldn't it be more fun to increase your number of plants and give each one a container they'll truly thrive in, without a lot of headache? - Ditto to Lena, again! Looks like Echeveria varieties. Of note, these are ones where some healthy pink / red around the outer leaves might not be bad. The one on the right might be Echeveria Halbingeri and the one on the left might be an Echeveria Huffs Pink or Blue Cloud. These plants especially like full sun (careful of burning from intense afternoon sun, depending on where you live), and if they get enough sun you may notice them turning a healthy rosey around the edges!

Hi. It really depends but some pointers: -Echeverias and Sempervivums: need a lot of sun. They can do with full morning sun and indirect at noon but can do all-day full AS LONG AS acclimated. They color up nice too. -Aloes, Gasterias, Haworthias: They can do bright light. But full can still work but will need to acclimate them slowly. They may have brilliant colors when stressed with full sun. -Kalanchoes, Graptoverias, Sedums: Also sun lovers. Full morning sun and indirect at noon. Most can do full sun as long as acclimated. So in general, safest is morning sun and then indirect at noon. However, stressing the plant will produce lots of new color. (Stress is making conditions less favorable like less water, more sun, more heat or cold).

Hi, Thank you everyone very much! To answer your questions: - Location: Melbourne, Australia - Sun: this area gets a good half a day of direct sunlight - Water/Drainage: This photo as I mentioned, was taken immediately after it rained, so it looks very wet. It is generally well protected from the rain by the leaves. Yes the rocks and sand and coal (i think perlite is another name) is ⅔ of the pot from the bottom. There are 4 big holes in the bottom of the pot and it drains really well. The plants were growing like crazy in this pot for over a year. And I replanted them 3-4 month ago, adding those rocks and sand. So the drainage issue is unlikely. The roots looked healthy. I could put some more rocks on top to protect it from the rain even more. -Plant type: don't know the name, it certainly looks just like K. luciae pictured above in Crenda's comment. There is a different succulent on the side. The very tall fast growing one. The leaves start to develop these black spots or dried edges and then bubble almost in an acid burn looking manner and die off. Should I trim those effected leaves?
