Why can't I keep my Argyranthemum (Marguerite Daisy) alive?
Comments (1)Hi Sharon, I'm thinking you may be watering a little too much. These plants like to dry out before getting a drink again. Next year if you try them again put in a big enough pot for the roots to spread, mix soil with some sand or perlite and keep on the dry side. Make sure they are getting lots of sun. Good luck! Comments (6)My own experience with semps has been that they rot in the late winter/early spring. Drainage is the problem, but it isn't the growing mix that prevents the drainage. What happens is that the mix freezes solid in the winter and when a warm, sunny day comes along the top inch or two of the container thaws, but the bottom does not so the drain holes are covered and the water can't drain. Cold and wet = death to semps. Oddly the rollers (Jovibarbas) seem largely immune to the water+cold problem that others have. Anyway, I have resolved this problem by moving the containers under a patio table where they still get sun, but most (not all) of the winter snow/rain misses them. This keeps them alive. However, it is also a pain for me. What I am going to try this year is switching to a shallow container (2" depth) and use pure Turface MVP and try leaving them out all winter to deal with the snow/rain. My hope is that the shallow container will fully thaw unlike the deeper ones so the water will drain fully. We shall see....See MoreWhy can't my green thumb keep crocosmia alive?
Comments (5)Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist soils in full sun. ===>>>> it can be very problematic to have moist well drained soil .. do you ... the link also states that they are like glads.... and once the bloom is spent.. they die to the ground.. and can be lifted for winter storage ... with the total lack of any background info .. i am guessing you are buying flowering corms in flower.. which immediately after bloom are going dormant [probably because they were forced early for sale in pots] ... and i have had little luck in getting pot grown bulbs/corms.. to transfer to the general garden ... especially now.. in sand .... perhaps you ought to try .. as the link says: Plant corms in spring 2-3" deep and 6-8" apart. .. to see if you might have better luck working in the ground.. rather than with pots ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreCan't keep my succulents alive!!
Comments (3)Knowledge is power. Read up on succulent care before buying more plants. Succulents need very bright light, and very good drainage. If you do not provide both of these things, your plants will suffer. Never plant in a pot with no drain hole. The water has no where to go, and will eventually rot the roots of your plant. Use a small unglazed terra cotta pot, and a free draining potting mix, so that the excess water will not stay around the roots and rot them. Remember that more houseplants die from over watering than any other reason. And with succulents, this is especially the case. The motto for watering is, 'When in doubt, Don't.' With a little practice, and a lot of light, you will have success. Christopher...See MoreChrissy- zone6B/7A
