Comments (4)Mostly whether it is an effect you want or not. Most of the time, when my silver jewelry oxidizes, it's just tarnish, but I have a couple pieces with raised designs where I'm letting the background go to black while keeping the raised design polish-there it's patina. Natural patination takes time, and the intermediate stages aren't necessarily that pretty. But it certainly works. I've got a 100 year old house with many original brass knobs, that as far as I know started out shiny. But I don't know how long it took them to get there. I made a copper potrack 10 or more years ago, and while the patina is coming along it still kind of looks like shiny copper that someone forgot to polish. Chemical patination, like liver sulfate, speed up the process. I'd tend to favor a natural or chemically-induced patina over a laquer imitation, but then I'm the girl who owns an entire book of patina recipes....See MoreKathy Furt
