Counter advice, quartz vs quartzite/granite
Comments (23)As Anglophilia has, I can attest to the wonderful durability of Corian. My current kitchen has 30+ year old Corian and the kitchen being remodeled in the new house had Corian of about the same age and it looked great. With the remodel, however, I will most likely not go with Corian because I'm simply tired of it. Am leaning towards quartz or granite. Jennifer Hogan's post above has a wonderful comparison based on actual experience. Regarding baking buttery dough, Julia Child, on her original show on PBS, mentioned she had a piece of marble cut to fit her fridge. She placed it there to cool and then used it as a pastry board for rolling out dough. This was back in the day when pretty much the only choice was Formica or some other brand of laminate for a counter top. Also, get what you like and don't worry about when it will become dated. Don't fool yourself - whatever you pick WILL look dated in 20 years and maybe sooner. However, what comes around goes around. Even boomerang Formica has come back in style....See MoreShare Photos Your Kitchen Counter Tops Quartzite vs Quartz
Comments (13)Then there is this article - that had me leaning toward quartzite ... http://usenaturalstone.org/definitive-guide-quartzite/ The Houzz article above has me leaning towards Quartz. : ) I am of the opinion that that are good features in both. Quartzite can take heat and you cannot set a hot pot on Quartz. Quartz does not stain as bad as Quartzite since Quartzite is a natural stone. Quartzite has to be sealed. I don't think Quartz does. I am thinking it is a toss up The one thing I am worried about is the part about the citrus and etching Quartz I have read a lot about. I use lemons a lot and we all cook around our island so I don't have full control of watching it all the time. . I would love to hear opinions from folks who have either. Have you had any issues with either choice?...See MoreTaj Mahal Quartzite - Opinions on our Counter Top Selection?
Comments (5)Wow the black and soft white w the Taj is going to look amaaaazinggg!! I use black as accents in the kitchen as my center island is a deep Tuscany green and cabs are White Duck. I racked my brains for months looking for backsplash and then I remembered in one of my bathrooms I used this oyster color very elongated subway tile with a soft wave. Went out to my storage to get a few pieces and laid it on there and it was perfect. It was this very soft and neutral greige color. If he’ll go back through my old post you should see pictures of my cabinets Taj Mahal and backsplash as I just cannot remember at this time. after the fact I wish I would’ve brought the Taj all the way up the wall but I’m glad now how it all turned out. So exciting for you in this phase-Good luck!...See MoreQuartzite Counter caulk help/advice
Comments (6)"you tube" has many tutorials about caulk removal..usually it has to do with a run of TILE that butts to a tub or counters...... not sure if this is more or less fragile...you dont want chips . I wet the caulk keep a bowl with water and small triangle of a sponge to keep it wet while you work it...... sear it w a stanley knife and carefully..slowly ...it pulls out w a tool.....removal is routine, periodically . caulk comes in color matches to grout... daltile has colored unsanded caulk or hardware store has caulk in almond /bisque / clear/ white/ gray etc. get the best caulk you want to spend for. If you have never removed or done caulking you can get a handyman for this. I usually do not caulk over old caulk.get it out..a few fragments remaining is okay. clean the crevice with toothpick with soft cloth wrapped around tip and alcohol into the crevice to kill mold spores if that is any issue..I doubt on this recent project you have moisture that built up...but there was old caulk??? Why was a new install done over old caulk left on a surface anyway? Is that what you are saying.........See Moremomdia
