mildicide for exterior paint?
Comments (4)Hi Kurtg!, I'd love to see that area sometime! Because I'm in Fargo, ND...well, you can maybe understand?! Your main issue will be getting that cedar clean/dry enough to prime & paint! * Is it painted now, or has it been stained previously? * Buy the BEST primers/paints you can afford after a good cleaning. * You're gonna need days of dry time b4 priming. It's a challenge I know! * Don't forget caulking seams, etc. Get a paintable exterior caulk. Mildewcides: MOST top-line EXTERIOR paints have some built-in. Check your brands label. Check for an 800# to inquire further about additional mildewcide additions. * I would choose a Satin-sheen for the actual main-body paint. Avoid Flats if lots of shade. * Semi-gloss (maybe gloss) for Trims. * TWO coats of paint on fresh primer! One coat won't cut it. * Wait 'till weather is reliably over 50 deg. for most of day. Comments (6)There are dealers for California Paints as well as Pratt and Lambert in the D.C. and Maryland market. I have experience with Pratt and Lambert paints and it has a solid reputation. California Paints is supposed to be a great product and I have talked to people who absolutely love it. They use Accolade in leiu of California. The 2010 is California's latest product and is better than Fresh Coat but is downrated because of the price. I don't have any experience with Kelly Moore paint. It is a small regional paint company. I have heard several paint contractors rave about MAB paints(M.A. Bruder paints) which is also available in your market. Their premium product is Seashore, which was developed for the Jersey Lighthouses. The mildew has little to do with the preparation or paint. Exterior paint has some mildewcide in it and will resist damage from the mildew. I must caution you about using a mildewcide additive in any paint. It automatically voids the warranty on the paint. If the paint store offers you an additive on your paint, tell them no. The problem is that the paint manufacturer has no control over the additives and will claim a paint failure on the additive. Mildew can be cleaned off with some bleach and water and can be sprayed or sponged on the surface and rinsed off. I highly recommend staying away from a flat finish, use at least an eggshell or satin finish. The sheen helps to keep mildew from affecting the paint....See MoreSW-Super Paint Exterior Finish Low Lustre vs Satin
Comments (1)In general, the more sheen a paint has, the more washable and scuff resistant it is. If your house gets a lot of field dust, or the birds like to dive bomb on your siding, satin will be the easier to clean. Flat paints are flat in appearance because under a microscope, they are very rough. This roughness scatters light rays top give the dll appearance. . This roughness will literally grab dirt out of the air and make cleaning more difficult. That being said, I chose Behr Ultra Exterior Flat for my Hardie siding. Trim was done in a white satin finish. Doors are semi-gloss. Personally, aesthetically I don't like a lot of sheen on rough textured siding such as rough cut cedar or even Hardie Plank. Areas that get a lot of wear, such a doors, should be at least satin for the sake of cleaning. Semi-Gloss might be even better. One thing I always caution homeowners to do is not just accept from the contractor that he is using Sherwin-Williams or Ben Moore paints. Insist to know exactly which line of paint will be used. All the major brand make a range of paints from contractor's grade to excellent paints. It is penny wise and pound foolish to not use the very best. The contractor using less than the best paint in not looking out for YOUR best interest....See MoreHelp choosing a paint and color for windows
Comments (25)SML, I too am seeing your inspiration pic as blue-green/gray/black on the windows. It is kind of reminiscent of an old black thats been faded by the sun... but is not a true black. Beth is correct that the two elements, door and window, should be of equal intensity, but that could be done by toning down the red of the door instead, if thats the direction you want to go. Nice looking house!...See MorePhoebe Winter
