Comments (16)Looks like depending on specific pollinator - the blossomscan maximize their scent emission at a certain time - and if it is some night moth or bat - makes sense to concentrate the resources on the time when this pollinator is active. I never could smell Paliavana prasinata - it bloomed for me several times. It is pollinated by bats and supposed to have a strong odor... I guess I slept instead of flying around in a dark. Another gesneriad - Nematanthus albus - bloomed nicely for me in a front room - but since the humidity upstairs is not that high I never registered it. Now I moved to the basement - where the humidity is 60% with all the plants... and the smell of dirty socks just knocks you off when this lovey plant blooms - another bat pollinated species....See MorePictures Of New Violet Blooms
Comments (16)Playful Spectrum does not tolerate heat at all for me. I had a heck of a time with it when I lived in GA and finally gave up on it. I'll dig up and post both regular photos of my Snow Edelweiss as well as some blooms when temperatures were particularly warm in summer before I moved up onto a mountain in NC last spring. As is typical, Russian/Ukrainian violets are usually grown at a lot cooler temperatures then we tend to grow them, especially in the South. So some of them can be hard to keep alive, or get very leggy (cooler temps keep them more compact as well) so I have noted extreme color changes in some of mine depending on my indoor temperatures. I can post several examples. Snow Edelweiss for me when first purchased at DAVS Convention three years ago: Snow Edelweiss (same plant) the following year: A baby from my mother plant shown here blooming for the first time:...See MoreMy only African violets never to bloom. Why? Advice please.
Comments (9)Hi Violets N Bunnies! From what I understand, heavily variegated African violets do not bloom as often as the non-variegated varieties because they produce less chlorophyll. The white parts of the leaves cannot photosynthesize, so only the green parts of the leaves can photosynthesize and produce energy for the plant to grow and bloom. Your plants still look young, so I would give them time. I think I read somewhere that AVs are more variegated in cooler weather, so maybe in the summertime they'll produce less variegated leaves and have more energy to bloom. I think your plants are stunning even without the blooms! I love the pink variegation on Dean's Faded Rose. I hope this helps! damask_rose_5 : )...See MoreAfrican Violet blooming while rooting
Comments (5)That is one GORGEOUS AV!!! Just beautiful! Re it blooming in water, I'm sure it matters how long it's been in the water and how close it was to blooming when put in the water. I don't leave mine in water for long at all. :)...See Morealabamaav
