Comments (23)Kerdi over the gypsum board can work. But like Hollysprings asked, the floor under the Kerdi needs to be sloped to the drain. Easiest way it to use a manufactured Kerdi Tray if it'll fit. If not, you can use deck mud. And you want to use a Kerdi Drain with the Kerdi, not a clamping drain. Putting a thick bed of sloped mud on top of flat Kerdi defeats the purpose of a topical membrane, it can result in water ponding on the floor and perpetually wet floor tile and grout, mildew issues, bad odor, AND it results in a non-compliant shower installation. For code compliance, the floor membrane itself needs to be sloped. Not just the tile that goes over the membrane. For the curb? I'm not a fan at all of drywall being installed on a shower curb. It's not a "walkable" or load-bearing material. And I'm only writing more "just in case": 1) the Kerdi that was put down in the shower. Was thinset used, or drywall joint compound? 2) The cement board on the floor outside of the shower: It should have been bedded in thinset. ie, spread thinset on the subfloor with a 1/4" notched trowel, then the cement board gets bedded in the thinset. Then you use fasteners to nail/screw the cement board to the subfloor. I could be mistaken, but I presume they didn't use thinset, as I see nothing in the 1" gap to the right of the hammer. The thinset fills any voids between the cement board and the subfloor. The fasteners hold the cement board in place. With no thinset under the cement board, walking on the tiled floor can result in miniscule up and down movement due to the micro-voids between the cement board and the subfloor. Eventually grout cracks, tiles could pop, etc. You can use an unmodified thinset. It'll only cost a couple of bucks to do the entire floor. And for grins, the cement board fasteners. Should be screwed every 8" on the edges and throughout the field of the panel. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Sorry to be piling on. And I agree, some of my comments may not apply in your installation. It's just that showers are so easy to build correctly. I have no idea why some go to such great lengths to screw them up....See MoreAdvice for renovation with layout changes hampered by bay windows
Comments (27)We DIYd our fireplace/chimney removal. We are not particularly gifted in the ways of DIY either. We did a total gut renovation on the house and our structural engineer confirmed the chimney wasn't supporting the house in any way. The fireplace was pink and huge--maybe 4x7 footprint? Our house is single level with the chimney continuing to the basement. We rented a drop box for the brick and an impact chisel from home depot to remove them. My husband started on the roof and removed brick by brick dropping them down the chimney where I'd gather them in 5 gallon buckets to take to the drop box. In all it took us a weekend and probably $500 in rental fees. The roof was repaired as part of our GCs scope of work in the remodel, so I'm not sure how much that cost, but it was a very simple patch It seems to me that chimney and fireplace removal is totally unskilled labor if it isn't holding up the house. As such, it really shouldn't cost a lot....See MoreOff center sink - could you live with this?
Comments (61)"Our plans didn't show the window..." This is, indeed, a cautionary tale. In this day and age of CAD programs which give you total viewing options there is no excuse for not providing all views of the proposed project. If your KD isn't providing 3-D views, keep looking. H2O2 - Stages sinks can be installed with the drain either way. When the DW is on the left, the deep side of the sink need to be left and visa-versa....See MoreMid Century Home Renovation
Comments (93)The new door is installed and beautiful...Not painted yet but still beautiful in white. The screen is white too so it almost looks like a white door but the neighbors all see it and and know it's going to be painted and some are stopping to come up and get a better look. We're having second, third, fourth etc...thoughts about the paint color. We're concerned about the contrast with using a dark color on an all white house...Not even color on the roof. We're thinking of a lighter color and aqua is in the mix as are lighter shades of blue. I have time to think about it because my husband still needs to do the walkway and we need to have our driveway cleaned before he'll do that...Just a few things but enough time. So Sarah I'll take a look at the Fresh Mint color. I'm thinking of a cross between pale blue and aqua. Something less intense than I've been thinking. Not as contrasty as a bright jewel tone that I really love but am not sure is right for the door. So thank you all. I'll try and get a pic up so you can see but bear with me...The next 10 days are busy with non-house things so may get sidelined. ANY suggestions are welcome. I'm very open at this point....See MoreBeth H. :
