The patio is not raised. The wall behind it is freestanding (2 sided).

Is there enough room around the tree stump table to pull your chairs in and out, without ending up in the garden bed?

Ohhh it would be a wall. That’s cool idea . But sounds like a lot of extra work I don’t have time for haha. I just meant like what landscape features/plants could I add to the layout that’s already there to make it look like a finished product.

We have no idea where you might be located so unless you share that vital piece of information, no one can offer any meaningful plant choices.

I forget what zone I’m in but I live in York, Pennsylvania. The plants don’t have to be specific im just looking for more a rough layout of where to put everything and then I can pick what I want to use

I did not comment because I didn't think I could get on board with the overall concept of this more or less remote/disconnected "patio." I'm not sure what we'll do here or why. And there's no context with the larger landscape scheme (things we don't see.) I can't figure out why this exists. If it was a patio, it would need a lot more paving for starters. And we'd need to see all of it's surroundings, such as where the camera was at the opposite side, capturing it while looking in the opposite direction. A tree stump alone is not justifying this for me. I need more.

Well when we cut down the tree there was this cool rock formation/wall that was around the tree (also a neat windmill thing was found underneath) so I added some more rocks to complete the outside part. and I just had this cool idea to use the area as a little patio type thing. It’s not too detached it’s close to our house and garage. I’ll attach a picture to give a better idea .

No. Not really. Why would anyone want to go there? What would they do? How long would they stay? It seems as if you've found/acquired materials and you're trying to make them into something to justify their use ... but, other than that, the finished product really has no use. If it were just a classy monument that people would admire as they pass and everyone who saw it liked it enough that they would respect it and care for it and 200 years hence it would still be there ... that would be OK. But that's not the direction I think it's taking. If the property was sold and taken over by new owners, would they continue to maintain and use this patio? I'm trying to find a reason for its existence at that spot. Other than "things just happened."

My questions are neither belittling or condescending. They're meant to get you to think about what you're doing in order to prevent disappointment or wasted effort. Try being a lot less touchy. If landscaping to you is about doing whatever you want, without regards to reasons, then just do it. No need to bother consulting anyone.

OP, there is much you take for granted, since you know the space and can see it live. The questions asked were to determine purpose and use, the site compared to the house, etc. One picture made the patio look like it was way out in a field. How are we to know If we don't ask?

I was was thinking moon flowers since they bloom in the evening and have a nice fragrance. fire pit and s'mores. The information about your wife drinking coffee in the morning and reading there points in a different direction.

The great pros here often seek more information to spark ideas. Don't kill creativity with unnecessary snark.

I know you all want to do something with the space.......but......I thought that you have this incredible view without the tree and without anything interrupting it.

If I owned a great view like that, I'd get rid of the tree stump, grass it in, and love that view.

Its a million dollar view ,,,,my opinion...I'd keep it wide open.

You know, if all you want is some planting suggestions, the appropriate forum would be Perennials or perhaps Shrubs. Landscaping implies by its very title that one wants to set the house--or in this case a patio--in its setting. That involves much more than plunking in flowers.

Landscape design doesn't require a house per se, but it requires a context and integration with surroundings. Here, we know a backdrop but nearly nothing else.

Bette P. I’m putting an exterior sealer/finish on the stump to help preserve it. Even then I know it won’t last forever and will just eventually rot, but for now I want to enjoy it and use it as a table. And when it gets bad I’ll remove it and put an actual patio table There to match the chairs.

Also I know this is probably information I shouldve provided but we already have a firepit I built that’s closer to the house not seen in the picture. if it wasn’t for that I definitely would make this a fire pit area.

Your location has a bit of a slope behind it. You could use that to your advantage by moving the back right corner of your patio to the "high" point and create a short "L" shaped retaining wall just high enough to be usable as extra seating.

On the left edge of your patio and the edge that will be in the foreground, outline your patio with pavers (or bricks or patio blocks or cap blocks) so that the top of the paver is level with the ground to make mowing around it a whole lot easier.

If moving the corner of your patiio back and to the right results in your tree stump not being in the center of your patio, that could be a good thing, especially as it inevitably rots.

There are different ways to incorporate your stump into your patio rather than cutting it the rest of the way down or having it the center of attention.
