Need help improving the appearance of this home
Comments (15)Frankly, any changes that would make a substantial difference in the appearance of the house will cost so much money it will likely end up over improved for the area. Painting the garage and adding flowers will improve the curb appeal of the existing structure but will not significantly change the appearance of the house itself. Unless it is less expensive by $20k or $30k as compared with similar houses in the market area, you will essentially be "losing" the amount of money it would take to remodel the outside into something else. If you love the location and layout enough for this to be your forever home it would be worth making expensive improvements as the cost would be amortized over many years. You could remodel the whole house in the style of the garage Jcl posted above.....new roof, new siding, architectural details....all it takes is money :-)...See MoreBathroom Appearance Improvement?
Comments (20)So I took most of your advice in the last few days. I added a runner rug, changed up soap bottles, added a basket, added art over bathtub, painted grout to make tile look new and added other decor. Does it look any better? Anything else you would add? Last question - how would you add two framed mirrors over my cabinets since they're at different heights? One counter is much longer than the other and I think it would look a bit odd if both mirrors were the same size. Perhaps I could add a long rectangular one over the long counter and an oval one over the small counter?...See MoreHouzz improvement? Anyone else notice new comments appear first?

Comments (8)It looks like the main entrance is the garage door, because it is large, unobscured and there is a clear, broad unobstructed path to it. The walk to the front door, on the other hand, is hidden, and obstructed and crowded by foliage. It's all but invisible from the street. Consider letting people see the path before they get to it. It seems visually overwhelming to smother the whole front of the house with shrubbery, including the windows. In addition, it adds to the maintenance required for upkeep. I think you need a small tree form off of the left corner of the house with some groundcover below, but it's hard to show since that spot directly lines up with another tree in front of it. Given the tight side lot lines, opportunities for planting are limited. You'll have to make do in some instances. The tree trimming is already a bit behind. Remove the lowest limbs as the tree grows in order that they don't develop into part of the permanent canopy. (The lowest are too low to do that and allow a view of the house.) At this time the existing exclamation point evergreens do not bother me, but they're going to outgrow their function being that close to the walk and drive. At some point you should prepare for the inevitability. Your house/yard could improve more if you could convince your neighbors to improve parts of their yards....See Moresuezbell
