should I cut a 'window' through my interior plaster wall?
Comments (6)First off, I say it's a wonderful idea - I did the same thing between a kitchen and dining room and have been very pleased - adds interest and practical benefits to both rooms. Main thing I question is your width calculations. You initially said 2', but they you said between the studs, which is more likely about 14". I don't think 14" is wide enough for a window, so you'll probably have to "header up" one stud, especially if it's a load-bearing wall. It's still doable, and in my opinion, worthwhile, but there will be a little more framing involved and you may have to make the opening bigger to give yourself room to work. As far as cutting in goes, I used a reciprocating saw held at a very hard angle to cut through the plaster first, then angled in to cut the (wood) lath. If you're cutting right next to a stud, cracking adjacent plaster should be less of a problem. Psteenhoek's idea of using a circular saw with two blades sounds theoretically better, but the problem with plaster and high speed blades is dust, and lots of it. I prefer easing in a recip saw blade to cut the plaster, clean out the loose plaster, then get a new blade to cut the wood lath. It takes a bit of a touch with the recip saw, but is much less dusty than a circular saw cut (though still dusty enough!)...See MorePlaster Ceiling - cut and sheetrock or sheetrock over
Comments (3)We pulled down soffits during a total kitchen remodel a few years ago, as well as the removal of fake beams in the livingroom. Although we didn't have plaster to contend with, we did have to fill the hole left by the soffit removal. A good sheetrock person should be able to patch the holes in your ceiling. Our sheetrock expert applied a knockdown finish in the kitchen and you can't tell the soffits were ever there. In the livingroom, he changed a poorly textured cathedral ceiling to a smooth surface that shows absolutely no trace of the old beams, nail holes, etc. I recall him saying that it was actually easier to put a skim coat over the whole ceiling than it was to retexture everything. Comments (2)I still have it. I am going to TRY and sell it as 1 plant. It has put out another new leaf and it has more pink and other variegation on it. So it is 'reverting back' to the 'Pink Princess' colors. So I am going to try and sell it for $200-300 locally. I cant ship it, it is to big. Someone else can cut it up and make a fortune from it....See MoreI have 9' Ceilings but I am only 5'2". Do I do cabs to ceiling?
Comments (100)I have 10' ceilings and 96" cabinets. I'm 5'9" and can't reach the top shelves but it bothers me not at all to bring out the aluminum 3-step ladder for the few times I need something (mostly holiday items) from those shelves. Luckily my 6'4" son-in-law loves to cook and does those holiday meals while being able to reach the top. There's not much else on those upper shelves other than wine glasses and some ice buckets; I just sold all of my china and crystal - so liberating !! I didn't want cabinets to the 10' ceiling because of the prohibitive extra cost, the look and also because of the Toll Brothers obligatory useless teensy kitchen windows that are 9.5' up on one wall. The discussion about using glass front cabinets in front of those windows, having to replace the trim around the windows, etc, lasted about 14 seconds. Nope. I insisted on having solid wood tops - 2 ginormous pieces - installed and stained to match because I didn't want to see the unfinished wood when I came down the stairs. Now I see giant dust bunnies and I've decided oh, who cares, lol. It's proven to be an excellent area for some serious art glass that I can't put "out" because of cat and grandchildren but if the house is ever on the market, the little bits of standard greenery will go up there instead. Long way of saying that, even being tall, I still use a stepladder but I think I've had 10' ceilings so many times that I'm used to it....See Moreci_lantro
