3 Hydrangeas...
Comments (2)Sister Theresa is not a very cold hardy variety it seems. Right now it has only one bloom on my fairly good sized shrub and it is planted in the more protected site of my garden (near the foundation of my house). You will more likely get chance of blooms from Nikko Blue. I don't know about Royal Red, I don't have it. Give them three years to mature and see what happens. Even my Sister Theresa is just on its second year in my garden so its third year might be a better story. Well, you might need some winter protection for your hydrangeas, search this forum how to do it. I don't do it because somehow my hydrangea flower buds survive the Philly winter but not sure if yours would too....See MoreHydrangea Poor Blooms
Comments (10)If the blooms are whiteish or grayish, it may be that th blooms have faded and can be deadheaded or left on the plant thru winter. Do not use lime to cure chlorotic leaves, krjoe. Liquid iron, liquid chelated compounds, aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate, iron sulfate, greensand or garden Sulphur will all work. The liquids work faster but have to be reapplied more often so if the leaves are quite yellowish, I use a liquid for speed and one of the others a few weeks afterwards. I saw both Bella Anna or Invincibelle Spirit on their 2nd year at a local nursery and was not impressed. I did not really like the pink per se of both so I decided to pass....See MoreHydrangea Mystery? 1 Won't Bloom
Comments (2)I would get one of those soil kits that tests for too much nitrogen and determine if somehow you are accumulating too much fertilizer where that non-bloomer is located. Sometimes lawn fertilizer, combined with the hydrangea's fertilizer combine and become too much so you get no blooms. As we get into Spring 2012, I would check if the shrubs are developing any flower buds or if the flower buds are developed and then are being eaten. So observe if pests like to congregate there... pests like deer, squirrels, etc congregate. They could be eating all of your flower buds. However, I would expect them to also munch on the other two NB. So I am not sure if this is THE cause but it is worth checking anyways. If you are not getting any flower buds then you may have an environmental problem. It is too cold and the buds dry out, for example. Or it is too dry during the Fall and-or Winter and the plant aborts the flower buds. NB should be hardy on your zone 6 so I would check if this one gets less water.... say because the sprinkler waters the other two fine but does not reach well enough to this one NB. Dense shade can be a problem too but if all three were in dense shade, I would expect them all to be affected. Just wondering, have you ever had a formal soil test done?...See MoreI have a 3 year old hydrangea and it has never bloomed....
Comments (3)You move it down into my yard!!! But seriously....zone 6 is borderline for the bloom buds to survive through the winter, so you might want to give it some protection in the winter. Just how one protects a 7ft tall plant is another dilema. Burlap? The other most common reason for non-blooming is improper pruning. Never prune in fall or spring (or at all if possible) except to deadhead old flowers. To size, prune only in summer, immediately after blooming. Good luck next year...yg...See MorePatti (z6a ON Canada)
