black tip on cactus

I just saw this on my potted cactus a couple of days ago -- I know there is etoliation (sp?) but this is quite an old cactus and my thought is to just let it do what it wants. In the summer it is out on the deck all day and I bring it in when it rains -- except for last week! I let it stay out in the rain because I figured one drenching was OK and it hadn't been recently watered. Otherwise I I water every two or three weeks. The thick woody stem to the left is 12 inches tall and supports another 12 inches of green growth that looks good to me. This is the same cactus that I posted under the title "My husband's cactus is dying" and I got so much help for it. The pot is so active and interesting to me even though I know it isn't glamorous like many cactus I see. Would you cut off that tip? What causes this? I appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Looks like rot or some fungus. I’m not sure, but it’s no bueno. Slice the black bits off with a very sharp clean knife. Cut at a slant so no rain will have a chance to pool up.

No black or brown should be in the flesh when you cut. If there is keep cutting. Keep dry while it forms a scab.

Three more common reasons that leaves scorch on the tips are: late freeze, fertilizer burn, too much water. It could be fertilizer burn, but if you have been watering frequently, especially if your soil is heavy, that could do it, too.

Edna's Mom, We all start somewhere. As I wrote, I have my doubts about your plants being C.g., but I've been wrong before. But in the end, it doesn't really matter if they are what they were sold as; it would be nice if they were, but even if they aren't they're nice columnar cacti. One nice thing about them - if they aren't C.g., you and Edna will be able to see visible growth in your lifetime and flowering, too, if things go right. And, yes, you can legally purchase real saguaros. The label you embedded is standard for any plant leaving AZ. CA (as one of the nearest states) requires it, as would many agricultural states. I'm sorry y'all didn't get what you thought you would be, but it could be that the company doesn't know otherwise - it would be fraud if they did. And they could make the defense that it is a saguaro - a South American one (marketing mishmash). There are many South American genera/species that look like a C.g., but Carnegia, a monotypic species (the only one in the genus) is strictly North American - Arizona, Mexico and a small part of CA. I don't know if it is more widespread in Arizona than Mexico. John, Well, then, what I'm suggesting is a family tradition. And it is too cute for words....

For the last 3 years I've just had a one rescued TC branch that I have kept on the drier side, and too much light as it gets burgundy coloring... but each year it delighted me with a couple red blooms :) pic below So with this hanging basket...trying to get the peat off of it's roots is my anxiety. But for now, just letting it acclimate to the new environment while I get around to sanitizing the terracotta pots. Gill, thank you for the link, it has lots of useful info. I will be rereading it again tonight to help it soak in. Hi bboy. Yes, each basket is filled with lots of older cuttings, they are quite impressive. I always wonder about the gold coloring on older branches...I guess it's their form of bark. Nancy

Yes Kara and Manuel -- I'll never forget the help I got here -- I was definitely desperate and unhappy. You are all so generous and I still refer back to the information in that thread -- I printed it out and also saved it on the computer. Before the days of the internet I'd have been in the library and that worked too. But here I got information AND moral support. Thanks again!

Is the tip mushy or dry? hard to tell from the picture. I grow outdoors and my aloes tend to dry on the tips (looks similar to photo) as their more obvious signs of needing a good drenching. If that's the case, no cutting necessary. However, if it is mushy, i agree with the advice above!
