Jasminum officinale
Comments (4)HELLO, I wonder if somebody knows where I could by a Jasminum Officinale or common jasmin in the Montreal, Canada area or if you are aware of any nursery or greenhouse that would ship it to Montreal. Right now I have one specimen with starlike white flowers and nice glossy leaves; however, pretty and scented as they are, they do not have the wonderfully perfumed flower of the common jasmine. I have looked all over without success. Can someone help me in my search, Please?...See MoreJasminum Officinale plants in Montreal
Comments (24)Sorry I just saw this post! No! they re hardy to zone 8 or 9 I believe. Definitely they cannot be planted in the ground over the winter. I got mine from Richter's . I keep them outside from mid - May to the mid -October, then I bring them indoors and keep them in the unheated portion of the basement in a semi-dormant state. During winter, they need cool night temperatures below 12 degrees C in order to bloom the next season. It took me a few years to get them to bloom since the plants were quite tiny when I received them and then, when they were mature enough to bloom, I did not have any idea that they needed this cooling period before they did. No matter the effort they give me a lot of pleasure. With a little bit of patience they can be grown even here....See MoreFiona Sunrise versus species Jasminum officinale?
Comments (0)Hi, I planted a couple of Fiona Sunrise vines in my garden earlier this year and am now waiting for the first flowers. I was wondering if this cultivar exhibits behavior different from the species (other than the leaf color of course)? Are there any differences with flower size/color/quality of fragrance? How about drought tolerance, eventual size and growth speed? I have also read that the species is somewhat drought tolerant. This is of interest to me because our summers are very dry - we get almost no precipitation from late June through September or so. It would be great if someone who has tried either this variety or the species in the Northwest could chime in with their experience. My experience so far: I planted two Fionas, one off mail order and one from a nursery. I planted the mail order one in April or so. We were having a rather warm early spring/late winter and I thought the plant would be happy outside. No sooner had it gone outside than we had a freeze and the vine promptly lost all its leaves. I waited for a month but the plant showed so signs of life, so I bought another one from a local nursery - this was in late May/early June and moved the Fiona I had purchased earlier to a spot beside the house - right by the foundation and under the eaves. It promptly came back to life. I now see lots of growth from it and what look like flower buds, so I am hopeful I see some flowers this year. The nursery-bought plant is languishing a bit; I'll give it a little more time to catch up. Also, how hardy are these jasmines? Can I expect them to last through a zone 8 (borderline zone 7) winter? Thanks!...See MoreFragrant Plants that Waft in the Breeze
Comments (0)A thread titled "Most Fragrants that Waft" began in March of 2000 as a request for a list of fragrant plants that "drift or waft on the air". After reaching the maximum 100 posts, the thread eventually expired due to inactivity. Not surprisingly, after the first post expired, the subject surfaced again in the post "Fragrants that Waft". The original post, "Most Fragrants that Waft", was saved and was kindly provided by yeona_sky. The following list was compiled by Clare_CA from the original "Most Fragrants that Waft" and the later post "Fragrants that Waft".
