Not planting a fall garden this year....preparing for spring instead

Looking at the 10 day weather forecast....It's really hot. And it appears to be going to continue. Here in New England, it used to be I could count on the middle of August - even if we had some hot days, it would cool off at night at least. This year, here it is the end of August and it might as well be the middle of July.

I didn't really keep up with the vegetable garden as well as I would have liked to this year, so I'm just going to call it a season and get ready for the spring and do better next year, hopefully. So I'd love some reminders of what are the best things I can do for empty beds now to have better soil in the spring. I do garden organically, so I'm looking for the best ideas to improve my soil using natural materials.
