Comments (3)Please listen to what these two professionals are telling you. They are well informed on what they speak. As to your question about some poly's ambering or yellowing over time. That was true in the past for oil based polys and from what I have read on other sights, it is still true today, That is the nature of oil based polyurethane. Water based polyurethane has its own "features" Some don't like the crystalline look of the finish. It does go down easily and it does dry quickly. But I have found that I use more coats than oil based. While I am not a professional, I do have years of experience in the DIY would and I have run the paint counter at different HD's around the country....See MoreRift and quartered rift and quartered - engineered or not?
Comments (3)brooklyngut , Rift & Quartered cut will by default be much more stable than regular Plain Sawn White Oak. Is your contractor asking for Engineered for peace of mind? A regular 5/8" Engineered should have a 4mm wear layer. That will allow for several refinishings based on use and finishing techniques. If you buy a quality product it should be CARB II compliant. A 5" Rift & Quartered floor in a home with climate controls should be just fine. Make sure your contractor nails and glues the flooring. We have sent lots of R&Q floors to NY that are solid with no complaints :-) joel@oakandbroad.com...See MoreDoes this rift & quartered white oak loo normal?
Comments (6)Those rays (the diagonal blobs of lighter colour) are precisely why I do NOT like rift sawn. The r&q sawn is a requirement for wide plank products. It leaves the wood more stable throughout the heating/cooling seasons. If you are unsure about these rays, then you might want to rethink some things: 1. Width...do you need anything more than 4" wide? 2. Colour - the smoking or white washing is HIGHLIGHTING the issue - is it a necessity to have this colour or just a personal 'want'? 3. The FINISH...you mention coconut oil causing discolouration. This is a perfect example of what you can expect with a hardwax oil finish. And it is the perfect illustration of what is most likely going to happen with a lower-grade urethane/polyurethane finish on a floor of that colouring 4. It brings us back to the colour. Hmmm. Lots of things to think about. My advice has always been, "If you see it in the sample you can be guaranteed to see it in the floor. If the sample disturbs you then you should not purchase the floor."...See MoreJohnson Flooring Co Inc
