Replacing and removing existing concrete around pool with pavers

I’m confused. I am replacing the old concrete around my pool with pavers I am keeping original coping around pool. someone told me to make sure that they put expansion foam around the coping even Though I’m keeping original coping. I’m confused because the masonry I already hired and gave a deposit to said he never heard of that since we are keeping original coping and we are putting in an expansion joint between coping do I need to add expansion FI am also around pool after we remove concrete and before we add pavers even though I will have an expansion joint of polyuremic sand. Being put in. So do I need both expansion foam and the sand expansion joint. Please help I’m so confused. What’s the story ?

I do not think it necessary. Since coping in place, just add pavers.

what's the reasoning behind the expansion foam? And does the someone who recommended the foam work with pools or hardscapes?

Another loud vote for pavers. They don't crack, provide more visual interest, are less slippery, and are far more flexible than concrete if you need to redesign your hardscaping (e.g. add or remove a walkway, create an area for a planter, etc.). Plus, I think they're timeless....cobblestone and brick walkways have existed for literally hundreds of years.

I live in FL and that's what they do here. if you have an existing concrete or cool crete deck they will install thinner pavers right on top of the old deck. i'm re-doing mine and that's what all 3 companies wanted to do. I have opted to not do that and instead have travertine tiles installed. the tiles will go right to the pools edge so no coping/bull nose pieces are required. the image i've shown is what i'm hoping to do. as for being able to withstand cold winters, I can't see why not but I would check with a local deck builder.

In my opinion, proper bonding is the most important aspect of a swimming pool. Improperly bonded or pools not bonded have caused deaths. It's not to be taken lightly. As I had stated, an electrician or pool pro who has knowledge of pool electricity is the best person to evaluate your current condition and advise you on any corrections to be made to bring it to the current code requirement and, make it safe. We have been required by town building depts. on some residential renovations to have a bond test performed by a trained individual to prove the current bonding is ok. A written document accompanies these tests. In New Jersey for instance, public pools must get tested and certified every 5 years for bonding. Diving boards are fine provided the pool meets the current standard for one.Yes, they are fun for the kids-and some adults!

The paver contractor should provide a 1/2" gap behind the coping to allow for expansion. Usually the paver base is used and is sufficient. If no joint is provided, the pavers can move and damage the back of the coping during freeze thaw periods, I have seen this countless times. Foam can be installed to be used a guide to provide the proper space.

On concrete patios, a foam expansion material is installed prior to the pour. It provides a space between the concrete and the coping at a 1/2". The gap is then filled with a self-leveling polysulfide material and prevents moisture from entering. It has an elastic consistency and moves with the coping and concrete. The name brand we use is Deck-O-Seal.

If the polysulfide is not installed, water can get between and possibly get under the coping base and pop it off during freeze/thaw cycles. Can also lead to tile issues also on concrete pools.
