Joseph Corlett, Corian and Formica Compact.

For good or bad, my relative obsessiveness with paint finishes has led me to various alternatives to painting certain things onsite. I have slab doors and very simple base and I am having the doors all sprayed offsite (conversion varnish) and will probably do the same with the base.

For the closets, for my painter to paint everything in oil base to a finish we were both happy with would be really expensive, (and it still would not be flawless). I don't really want melamine on MDF so much.

So I was thinking instead of doing a bunch of shelves in conversion varnish, what if the shelves were made out of 1/2" Corian? Would they be really heavy? The other alternative would be Formica Compact which is 1/2" Formica.
