Are oak cabinets totally outdated?
Comments (70)I love the look of oak. When I bought my refacing supplies 2 years ago, I went with oak. Of course it took me 2 years to get started on the project, and by then my distributor had all kinds of woods, but I'm still happy with oak. I like the graining, and it has a kind of "Craftsman" look that I like. I have the plain flat-panel doors so they're kind of Craftsman-looking and I think that makes them more "classic" instead of "dated." Or maybe I'm just delusional. I do think, however, that those oak doors with the arched panels look a bit dated. But today's dated is tomorrow's retro. Don't you think that in a few years all those maple and cherry cabinets with the dark granite counters will look dated?...See MorePlease help choosing between outdated builder colors
Comments (44)Yes, I don't like or respect these people as described, although I do at least understand businesspeople's refusal to guide customers to important emotional choices--lots of opportunity for blame later on there, especially with people who don't really know what they want, like you. You're not in shape to make these decisions quite yet, but can be. With the available choices limited, my decisions would have been made within a half hour, 10 minutes for choosing my favorites while trying them out in sunlight, artificial light and shadow, 20 for playing with any other possibilities anyway just to make sure--because I know what I like and don't. You should put them off for a day or two if necessary (how they feel about it is no more your concern than your eventual satisfaction with your choices is theirs') while you educate yourself about what you really like, or just become reacquainted with your own preferences. Sit down with kitchen web sites and magazines, as many as you can get (splurge at the magazine rack), and print and tear out pictures of everything you like. Grab all the cabinet brochures you can find. Don't try to match the choices your builder offers--at this point, choose EVERYTHING you like. Bulgarian castle, California beach house. Be sure to include pictures of other rooms with fabrics and colors you like. Look your piles over and sort them out into types (most of us are drawn to more than one look). You'll see patterns of what you like--figure out what it is you like in them--cabinets darker than floors? Floors darker than cabinets? Strong contrast, medium contrast, or harmony with little contrast? Tendency to neutral browns, or golden or reddish? Choose those pictures that are possible for you in this house and discard the rest--without regret. The choices you have this time around are very nice. By now you're learning what you need to know to make these decisions--or maybe have just erased the confusion too many choices at once have caused. You still have to tackle the backsplash decision, which ideally should be made before everything's finalilzed. What do your pictures say you like? Drama, via movement or contrast, or both? Serenity? Big tile? Little tile? Horizontal? Vertical? Diagonal? Urban-suburban sophisticate? Family cottage? Etc. Now that you have regained control and know you won't be making some awful mistake, enjoy!...See MoreRed Hollywood Granite...... It's perfect
Comments (8)I can understand why black would be suggested... it makes sense with what you described. I think I would choose a light stone though. One with no movement but a lighter color. I think the light would actually make the island stone pop more. You decribe rich beautiful finishes in the darker family. A dark perimeter may lessen the impact of the rich dark finishes while a contrast (lighter stone or quartz) brighten it. Dark would be nice and traditional... it's must my personal preferences. LOVE your stone!!...See MoreMaplew/ Coffee glaze Cabinets - Red Dragon or Verde Laura?
Comments (2)Both of your selections are beautiful, and I agree with remodelfla about needing to see some specifics. We do not have ours installed yet (cabinets come in about 10 days), but we selected an equally dramatic red granite (called Diamond Red, but I've never seen anything like it online or in stone yards). I did see something called "Diamond Red" once, but it doesn't look anything like what we selected. Anyway, our perimeter cabs will be a creamy white, but the island is stained (sable with a coffee glaze). Same granite on both. DH and I both think the granite is very striking and bold, and we can hardly wait to see it come together. It is certainly not something that one might choose if planning to resell anytime soon, because it is far from neutral, but we aren't, so we went with the one that we couldn't stop thinking about. Do either of those lovely slabs inspire you in that way?...See MoreAnna (6B/7A in MD)
