Need some upholstery done........ Help with ideas?
Comments (26)I have been looking for a house to buy, and I looked at one that had a layout somewhat like yours. I just wasn't ready to buy and it wasn't exactly in my price range either, but it was hard to turn down because it had a fireplace like yours, open on one side to the LR and the other to the kitchen. Except the house I looked at was particularly odd, in that it had stone face on the LR side of the fireplace and brick on the kitchen side. So that would have had to be redone, IMHO and it was one of the reasons I passed on the house, just didn't have it in me to do that. But anyway, while I was dreaming of what I would do with that house, I had this idea, and let me toss this out to you just for conversation's sake. The house had an open concept with a dining area adjacent to the kitchen, so the fireplace on the kitchen side was just for the view. If I had bought the house, I determined that I would get two wingback chairs for the kitchen side, and have them in front of the fireplace, at a 90 degree angle to it, facing each other, with a table in between for tea or a game for two. Any chance of you wanting or being able to do something like that with your wing chairs? Might be fun to try, and you could move the other chairs around in the LR to fill in the spaces. I just love the romance of a wingback chair curled up by the fire with my cup of tea....See MoreUpholstery help needed
Comments (8)Just updating this to say that I finally made it to the Ballard store. Maddielee, you were so right! The frame quality seemed tolerable but not great, but their fabrics were horrid. My SIL was with me and she kept saying, "Well, maybe they're all meant for outdoor use or something." They reminded me of the cheaper grade of newer ikea slipcovers, the ones that are mostly poly. You could read the tags of the cushions easily through the display fabrics, and the ones in their swatches weren't any better. On the whole I think one would be better off going to Pier 1 or World Market, where the sofa would be just as disposable but at least priced accordingly. Oh well, at least now I am sure that it is worth redoing my old sofa. FWIW we also went to Crate and Barrel and they are slipping, too. Some models were okay but others, yeesh. Nothing like the C&B of former days, although other furniture there was still not too bad. ETA I know Ballard has a bring-your-own-fabric option, but you pay a substantial premium for that and it didn't seem that whoever does their plain fabric sofas understands much about where seams go. The ones with exposed wood frames were a bit better in that respect....See MoreRe-upholstery help
Comments (6)Ah-ha! Thank you all very much. I wasn't able to get the entire back off last night and take pictures (I will try over the weekend in case someone else finds this thread needing help in the future) but you were completely right. I was able to poke around in there a bit and the fabric is pulled to the back and sort of in between two pieces of wood. The wood is not holding them, it is almost a "protected" space for the fabric to be stapled and then the rest of the chair assembled. Hard to explain. I promise pictures as soon as I can, this is of course a side project and we have a sink vanity to finish this weekend too. Thanks again everyone....See MoreChair Upholstery Help
Comments (1)Any of those patterns would work on that chair. You don't show anything else so we don't know what else is in the room. Are you trying to stay really traditional? Go to the fabric store and find something you love. Take a cushion from the sofa or chair to see if the fabric will blend....See MoreJoanna Lamb
