Oak cabinet options - paint walls vs paint cabinets?
Comments (18)You have a wonderful lot of storage. I also don't find your cabinets objectionable. I think the builder grade oak cabinets are the ones that have given oak such a bad name. There are some very nice, different style oak cabinets like yours that are quite lovely. I agree with the lighting. I would say holes in the drywall would be better than such a terribly dated, dirty looking (nothing personal, I think all those of that style look dirty) box light. It just cannot be your style! I have a hard time speaking to color online, given different monitor resolutions. Green to gray would probably be lovely with your countertop, but gray to me wouldn't compliment what I'm seeing color-wise of your cabs. Green? As long as it didn't have a yellow base. You've got lots of potential there! :)...See MoreHelp! Serious paint issue with kitchen cabinets!
Comments (5)I sell kitchen cabinets and the joint separation is the main topic of discussion "prior" to the sales presentation involving painted cabinets. It happens. It will happen, sooner or later. Why? Spraying the paint across the joint, or "bridging the gap" creates a solid paint film. Brushing the paint doesn't bridge the gap because it's applied in opposite directions. It will last longer, but will still crack at the wood seams. Show us the pictures! Michael...See MorePainted cabinet issues- matching questions
Comments (3)Well, contractors of any kind may insist on using their favorite products because they have tried them all already and know which are the true winners. Also, what if he switches products and there is some kind of learning curve involved? It's true that every paint manufacturer makes a paint appropriate for use on cabinets, but that doesn't mean they are all good. As for painting one room all the same color, the walls are not going to match the cabinets no matter what because of lighting and shadows and because one surface is cabinet and one surface is wall. If the color match isn't quite perfect, it's not going to matter. As for color matching in general, it's somewhat of an inexact science, but for most customers, close is good enough. You should be able to ask to approve the color match before proceeding with the work though. In fact, if I run into a customer that I can sniff out is going to be particular about the exactness of the color match, I will make them sign off on the match before painting anything....See MoreHELP!! Comments (16)With that beautiful acacia floor with its distinctive grain I too would vote for something without too bold a competing pattern. A classic soapstone, or a “mist” (Virginia, Silver etc) honed granite or a soft white marble with gray - any of those would look beautiful. I suspect as geologists that you both really “see” stones for what they are as opposed to the general public’s perception of counters as being simply a field of color and pattern. But a deeper knowledge or appreciation of the material itself is not your friend when getting everything to pair well. Ironically. I don’t find Houzz easy to search, but you might see what you can locate pictures of kitchens with acacia floors as your starting point. I would focus on the choices of counters used first, then cabinet color, and finally backsplash. Re the marrying cool tones to warm ones there shades that are neutral but a paint color still will not tie everything together. You can used the same stone for the counter and backsplash though, which eliminates one matching conundrum. Final thought, don’t use quartz - you are geologists - you of all folk should have real stone....See MoreSandra Grimsley
