Porch Decor/Front of House Facelift

Could you share some recommendations on how I could jazz up my front porch and curb appeal a bit?

That huge tree should be looked at by a pro to see if it is a risk. I would remove the two bushes at the entrance. They look uninviting and act like a visual gate saying "Keep out!" Extend those two beds so they curve on up the sidewalk toward the porch for a more welcoming look. Have a landscape architect plan the installation for something interesting and/or blooming all year round. I'd remove anything growing near the house foundation that doesn't bloom. Light, airy and more loose plantings will be more friendly and appealing. For the porch, I think it would be more interesting to re-work the door area. I can't tell what the trim piece above it is, but the lights are too small. I would get a door with glass that repeats the design of the other windows and paint it white so you can keep the storm door. If you want to remove the railing, replace it with low planter boxes sitting on the porch floor. Fill them with seasonal annuals and/or greenery at different times of the year. If you keep the railing, add planters to them. If you sit out there, some space between the boxes could be bench seats that look like the planter boxes.

I can't see from the picture how deep the porch is, but I would add a bench in front of the double windows with colorful accent pillows. Tall pots on either side with colorful plants. Your shrubs look a little over grown and the bush on the left side near the sidewalk is too close. You need color. I recommend refreshing the beds, curving the left side down the path to the sidewalk.

Hi lazy-g, I miss the tree too! (But not the little crab apples.) We had about 18 years of beautiful blossoms, then a few years of diminishing blooms and finally a year of nothing (no leaves or blooms), so it had to go. At least the front room is nice and sunny now, and there's a small hydrangea tree now planted near there. The hydrangea will never be the same as the previous tree, but I'm hoping to sell in a couple of years so maybe the next family will plant another big blossoming tree.

The entry is impressive, and the doors take up most of the width so I’d skip the planters. Maybe a large, flat piece of metal sculpture on the wall to the left of the door. Lighting looks perfect to me. Add a large impressive welcome mat.

Haven't read all the comments - I see my egg chair idea was not a fav. What I was thinking was to use the space on the right side of the door - as we're looking at it - for any furniture. I think I said, or I was thinking, the space on the left would be plants or a garden vibe. I was thinking you could pull off whimsical chair on the far right side,but I may have been wrong. I deliberately chose a dark chair, fwiw and I did mean a tall chair. But anyway I agree, the wicker chair isn't right. Sorry to send you on a goose chase. I think an umbrella is indeed too casual for your house front, although I think the impulse for shade, behind my "maybe an egg chair" is correct. A shaded garden seems to be what we're all thinking right back to the water feature suggestion. I was thinking your house would be enhanced by landscaping and a sense of shade, as in a french house landscaping interweb search.

What a sweet home! I'm no help with landscaping, but it looks like your house could use slightly larger lights flanking the front door. Black is good because it relates to your railing. New landscaping in the long run. In the short run, buy ten or twenty gallon cans of bright blooming perennials that you can tuck in around the front steps and next to the sentry shrubs. The sentry shrubs and the perennials can be transplanted when you have a new landscape plan, at whatever time of year is right for your area.

New windowboxes, overplanted with seasonal flowers and green filler plants, would be striking.
