Front Porch Rebuild - Before/After (x-post from Decorating forum)
It's just a front porch, but it was a big project for me!
Backstory: My DH and I always wanted to redo the front of our house with a big front porch. A cancer diagnosis and 3 years of treatments put those plans on hold. A few years after losing him I decided to do the project on a smaller scale. I planned to replace some aging columns and cracked concrete steps, and the project grew from there. I first met with the architect in November of 2016, so it took me awhile to get it done!
The project included a bigger front porch, removing a (dying) tree, relocating some shrubs and getting new landscaping, replacing a cobblestone walkway with grey stone pavers, and new door, sidelights, railings, first floor windows, light, numbers, mailbox, and some indoor wall work and painting. Phew! Scope creep.
Loved all the people I worked with - architect, builder, landscaper, railings guy, painter, and all their workers. Happy to provide resources for anyone who is interested.
Anyway, here is one before shot and a few after.
Before: My BF cut down and pull out the roots of the tree by hand! Boxwood and viburnum shrubs were saved and relocated. Kept the shutters but repainted.
After:
The landscaping was just in for this shot; it has since bloomed (lots of azaleas) and grown (grasses on the right where it looks bare) and I've replanted the urns.
I came home from work on a rainy day to see my new landscaping! So excited. Bet you love the awesome green bin I used until the new mailbox went up. (eye roll):
Side view shows a bit more of the walkway and the new iron railings (door and ceiling not finished and no landscaping in this one.) You can just see the two electrical outlets on the columns next to the house; had to have those big grey boxes for inspection and those have been replaced with flush white covers. I will love those for holiday lights - the switch is indoors:
I don't have a good night shot, but I really love my new backlit numbers. People can actually find my house at night! (Ceiling and door not stained, wall not yet painted in this shot.)

Comments (3)I considered that same shower when I was designing my dog room. The quotes to create it were VERY costly because the whole thing needed to be built, waterproofed, etc. Even building a shower pan is quite in depth. Comments (1)The concrete pillar things are weird... would it be possible to paint them same color as the brick (the mid red tone) to help them blend in to the background? And yes with the grey door and roof I think the brass looks out of place and silver tones will look better. Comments (6)Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! Comments (20)Here are the new Permacast porch columns, installed this afternoon. I had ordered them on Aug. 13th, and waited and waited and then told they were on a two week back order. Finally they came in and then waited a week for the lumber yard to deliver them to my house. Called contractor twice but he never returned my calls. I found out this morning that he had been on vacation in Colorado! Good thing he called, I was going to give him the rest of this week and then I was finding someone else. ha. I think the columns look great. NO pitts, NO cracks, No seams. I was going to hire a painter but since they look so good and contractor didn't even recommend sanding, I'm going to do it myself. The only thing is they didn't countersink the screws that went in under the caps. Some were sunk better than others but he said he was afraid to tighten too much for fear the material would crack. I suppose I can fill them over with a bit of caulk before I paint. Probably be the only person who notices. Anyway thought I'd post an update. So far, I'd recommend this product to others. However, we'll see after painting how well the paint holds up to weather,ect. Thanks for all the input while I made my decision....See More
