has anyone been to Growers Outlet recently?
Comments (2)I've had decent luck with them...but I'm very picky about the plants I buy. My pansies have never done well, but that may be from all the bunnies in my neighborhood. :) I plan on going there this weekend to get tulip bulbs. Those go really fast... Here is a link that might be useful: Their latest ad...See MoreHas anyone recently paid sales tax @ room and board?
Comments (3)The states have been cracking down on this because : 1: Not only does the retailer that pays taxes to that state lose out on a sale. But the state itself loses as well. 2. Local retailers have become showrooms for all the North Carolina & internet discounters. These retailers (that pay for heat, lights, Health Insurance for employees etc.) have been going out of business or suffering from lack of business. This is a way to help even the playing field for these local stores....See MoreHas anyone done an Eco-friendly renovation?
Comments (32)LOL Plllog :) I'd love to meet your knob and puller heh heh Do you only knock when the red light is on? :oP I actually am greeted by name at Vintage Hardware heh heh The owner came out to meet me (they want to reproduce my ceiling medallions) last time I was in. He purchased another home we were looking at last year. They're not green :) But they're local and it's important to me to support the communities we live in whenever we can. I'm going to have him over as soon as I finish unpacking so he can go through the house. He has never been here and is dying to get a peek at the brass and the medallions and he's a wealth of period information which I really need. Are you local? And who's your tile person? I'm not sure what we're doing about tile...we have several original fireplaces that need replacement pieces or have had some made but they're badly done. Someday we'll get around to fixing them as well (mind you the kitchen comes first because I'm tired of cooking on the back porch LOL). Carbon footprints...those are always buzz words Dh gets a giggle out of. We were up on the slope in ANWAR and this dude was bragging about his carbon footprint being so much smaller than ours because he does not own a car. DH did some calculations for the dork overnight and came back to show him his real carbon footprint in comparison to someone who commutes 30 miles a day. His was way larger...see he wasn't counting the carbon footprint his FLIGHT TO WORK weekly cost :) DOH again...sometimes it's all about perception and being cool, not being green at all. Avoiding exotic woods and not driving a Hummer to work are two easy and real green steps :) Ride sharing in your Hummer...not so much :P...See MoreHas anyone had Hardie cement siding installed recently in Florida?
Comments (17)We are in the process of siding our addition with Hardie board, and my advice is to get very specific information for your estimate. - Hardie board comes in several pre-painted colors - saves a lot of time if you like the color. - Hardie also comes in different widths and finishes; make sure you know what you like and want. If you go to a professional building supplier (not HD or Lowes), they should have sample boards that show all finishes and colors. The store we went to was called the Roofing Center, but they also sold and displayed siding. - In the picture in the above post you see vertical trim boards on the ends and trim around windows - are they going to be Hardie also? We are using man-made trim boards from Boral, since my contractor found them much easier to work with. - Does the contractor have experience with installing Hardie board? As already mentioned, nail gun pressure and type of nails is important. You also need to ensure they are going to flash the seams between boards in a long run (recommended now by Hardie), paint/seal exposed cut edges that face up (you can get matched paint at HD), and caulk the seams where it comes up against the trim. All of these things are designed to make the siding last longer. Bruce...See Morelucillle
