Today....The Anniversary
Comments (31)Congratulations on your anniversary, Springroz! That's wonderful to read. While I don't follow the Grain Brain diet specifically, I have found that a low-carb/high fat diet makes me feel and function much better than not. I have thyroid issues that impact other areas of my health and I've been unable to find a competent endocrinologist in my area because diabetes research and treatments are more lucrative (and easier to understand). My endo basically spends 5 minutes with me at my annual appt. checking my neck for a goiter, asking how I've been feeling (but not paying attention to my responses) and sending me for lab work so she can write me another prescription and send me on my way until next year. I've literally given up on her for any sort of guidance, other than the prescription, which I need. I've been researching and experimenting with diet for years and know what works for me. I think when people think "low carb" they assume we're dining on bacon and NY strip every meal. I may have small amounts of red meat here and there, but my primary sources of fat are from avocados, coconut oil, nuts and seeds. Whenever I eat grains or sugar and a few other trigger foods (like aspartame and nitrates), I feel it. There is a definite cause and effect. I'm spending this week focusing on my diet because I made some poor choices over Thanksgiving. (I'm weak when others cook for me...) I think Annie's points about our dietary needs being individual is right on target. It's difficult and can be frustrating and very, very inconvenient, especially when I'm cooking for my family. But I look at it as a every bit as much as a prescription for my health, too. Thanks for your post... you've inspired me to get back on track....See MoreWatched "The Finest Hours" today.
Comments (0)Really good movie. I got home and went searching to see if it was based on a book, it was. So, I ordered the book. It's based on a true story. Made me want to go back to Massachusetts too, although, not in the middle of Winter....See MoreSaw "The Lady in the Van" Today

Comments (14)Carol, Blackspot on "Zalud" is scant and fleeting, during the few weeks of late winter/early spring it does happen here, so she can get it, but nothing like the extent to which Pernetianas get it, which often defoliate entirely. I don't know about elsewhere. My sister has been growing it more than five years now in Medford, OR and finds it healthy and productive, she said recently, but I didn't ask her specifically about BS (I was just happy it is surviving the goats, the chickens, the large dogs, and general chaos there!). The scent is light, at best, to my nose. Its greatest charm is visual, I think, in those unique, intricate, imbricate layers of well over a hundred petals in a large flower (always -- petal count and bloom size do not diminish in hot weather). I don't know about haunted houses, but "Glendora" certainly is sturdy -- I always hack her back to about 3 1/2' every winter, and do "extreme deadheading" thereafter, so that she stays under 6' or so by the end of the season (and this in a spot near a large oak that has defeated other roses). The scent does waft during flushes. It's funny about the husbands knowing all about Sir Henry Segrave -- I had no idea until I looked him up after getting the rose. My favorite photo of a fully open bloom of ZHSR: ZHSR in the garden:...See More- 8 years ago
