Can penetrating sealer fix a bad new grout installation?
Comments (7)Actually, whether you're supposed to do it or not, a penetrating sealer called "Pourous Plus 511 by Miracle Sealants" could help in a situation like that. I have seen that actually seal it and stop the grout from coming up in the same type high desert situation where before that, every time the grout was wet, it was dissolving in the water and coming up. Another good water based sealer was tried before and it didn't do anything to help that particular situation but perhaps because the Porous Plus contains petroleum products, it was able to go in and really set and seal everything well with no problems and without having to regrout. This is well past the original post date but I hope this helps someone else out there....See MorePlease provide advise wrong grout color was used on new flooring
Comments (8)The photo shows now. If they used a different color than was specified in the contract then that’s their mistake. Perhaps someone here can suggest a solution that doesn’t involved pulling up the tile. Did they do any test samples for you? Were you on site when they started the grout work so you could see the color ? I’m no pro but we recently redid a bathroom, total gut job, and the tile guy had me look at the grout as he started, just to make sure it looked as I expected. The grout looked different when seen against my tile compared to the sample, partly because of 5he specific lighting in the bathroom. As he started to grout, we realized that the colr wasn’t an ideal choice ( athough close) and he tweaked the color a bit....See MorePlease tell me how this can be fixed. Contractor is pushing back
Comments (35)So everyone is screaming rip it out so I will ask who picked out the tile? What exactly is so substandard. Zoomed in pics of one spot doesn't constitute a bad tile job. Tile work is not cnc accurate type work. When you zoom in on pics ANY tile job will look bad. The look of subway tile on the ceiling and the change of pattern is the problem here not the install. It can take an entire day to do touch ups and caulking properly. Problem is nobody does this as it is tedious work. Besides the tile layout what ever cant be fixed with touch ups and caulk? If tiel guys would simply use a stone and dedicate a day to clean up and caulk it would eliminate the majority of these posts. I am tired of people on here just jumping at attacking every job they see and of course waiting for the WATERPROOFING comment on every shower. Tile on tile is acceptable with todays products. They should have redone it but again we dont know the entire reason why they didnt. How about take some pics from 5 feet away so we can see the entire job. $100k reno but how much was allocated for the tile job we are seeing here? White tile with dark grout is one of the most difficult tile jobs there is. i just did one and can tell you the amount of hours that is required because the color contrast amplifies every single flaw. Then the more accurate you get amplifies those smaller flaws even more. It is almost impossible to be able to zoom in on a white/dark grout job like you have posted....See MoreIs imperfect grout the tile or contractor’s fault?
Comments (17)At least from a distance your tiles look fine. My tiles have grout which blends with the edge of the tiles - tiles are handfired so that the edge is the "beige" of pottery if that makes sense and my grout is a beige that is the same color. If I sit in my bathroom and stare at the grout I can find places that might be a bit imperfect but in real life circumstances when I am not bored and focusing on every square inch of surface there aren't any discernible imperfections and the tile job was great. At least in my experience there is always a bit of shock and second guessing immediately after a remodel. I had similar freak outs when my marble was installed but luckily I had a designer I trusted who was able to explain that it wasn't damaged and wasn't going to suddenly crack off but was a tiny natural "fissure". She was also able to provide me with input as to when something was "wrong" and needed to be fixed and when something was fine and just "normal" - a reality check from a trusted knowledgable source is indispensable during a remodel. Whenever I order furniture I know that I am going to freak out when it arrives - hate it - see every imperfection and then am fine after the initial shock on its arrival. I even joke about it with my designer and my friend who is my design sounding board and tell them to expect my usual meltdown on arrival :-)...See MoreSkippack Tile & Stone
