Need banister/hand rail help for closed staircase
Comments (5)I really like that!! You may be right that it is better done in a new build, but it's certainly a question I can run by one of our contractors. Even if we can't do it, you really nailed the look I was hoping for : )) Here is the best I've seen on Houzz, but it's difficult to choose online. https://tinyurl.com/SandedBronzeSquareHandRail...See MoreFlooring / stairwell dilemma
Comments (11)Did you post in flooring? That's where your question about 5 coats of stain belongs. I'd be really, really careful with stain, and your choice of contractor to do the work. As far as how it looks, why don't you stain up a bunch of boards and drag them around to where you need to see them as you're rounding the bend, and coming down the stairs. I think your downstairs floor looks nice, and rustic. It looks like quite the contrast to have sharply contrasting white paint/dark flooring on the staircase. It's not the complementing of the floor colors that is an issue, to me, I'm asking about your "style". You have a rustic floor downstairs, and I see some traditional style going on. Are you going for a complementary style with the handrail? The image you show looks like a glam sort of style, high contrast, with gold railings. I know you want wrought iron railings, but I'm asking whether the glass and iron and white and blackish stairs mesh well with the more traditional/country look downstairs. Maybe it does. I'm just asking....See MoreSlanted Ceiling, Top of Stairwell light delimma
Comments (6)If you want a new decorative fixture, it will be part of the 2nd floor decor, so I'd go with Sina's selection. Otherwise, install a recessed wall washer to highlight a piece of art on the wall that has no light switch. Remember, it will be a feature of the 2nd floor living space....See MoreOpening up stairwell
Comments (12)Alicia, $1000 to come and take a look is a ridiculous price... Around here a licensed engineer will come out and evaluate the situation for around $250 give or take and if you need something in writing it will be a few hundred more, especially for something like this. That said and as evaluation goes, most knowledgeable licensed contractors can tell you if this can be open or not with or without structural modification for the same amount or less. Call a few reputable remodeling companies or a local GC who does remodeling in the area and see what they have to say. Good luck...See Morestefaniebogles
