How would you improve curb appeal on my house?
Comments (43)You could use some help from the LD forum on this landscaping. Since you didn't pick the hollies and aren't attached to them, I'll be blunt: for my eye there's not much you can do with paint colours or house details to distract from the very unfortunate placement of those bushes. I'm not saying they couldn't be useful if you combined them with some other landscaping (the other forum people tend to be better at foundation planting issues than I am), but on their own at that height they... are unnecessary, to put it mildly. The house has a very nice foundation, nothing to hide. Do any similar houses in your area have no foundation planting with more greenery further out in the yard instead? I might be inclined to put such a hedge perpendicular to the house if anywhere in that yard, perhaps along the side property line. Cutting them and fleshing out the beds further into the yard with more plantings in front of them might help. I think they will sprout from below if cut back, but check that on the shrubs forum perhaps, or someone on LD might know. KarinL...See MoreHow do I give this house curb appeal?
Comments (3)I posted two similar bungalow style homes below. Your house differs from these in two areas: color areas and window treatments. Your house has three color areas, the brick, the painted siding and the painted stucco. When you look at the photos below, there isn't more than 2 body colors on the first house and only one of the second house. Both houses draw attention to the bow window (with an overhang) and large window with the transom and shutters. Your house seems to have the overhang over the bow window, but it looks like a huge sunshade was added. I'd consider limiting the colors to one or two, and removing the huge sunshade. If you paint the brick, you might need to consider a whitewash or a lime wash, so as it wears away, it will still look pleasant....See MoreDo you have any advice to give this exterior more curb appeal?
Comments (20)Thank you all so much. I appreciate the input. Celerygirl, seeing the colors imposed on the house is amazing. I like them all. Probably favor the top one. Can I bother you for the paint name? Love the door, would never have picked something like that! Houssaon, The belly board is the the strip that separates the bottom brick from the upper siding? It really does make a difference in the sample house you posted. It would run from the left side of the house, over the garage doors, little porch area, over the first floors windows and then ends at the right side of the house? I really like that idea. Thank yo so much. Ohio, Thank yo for you recommendation. Is there room for taller windows, which I far prefer, and if so, would you install windows with or without mullion? K Laurence and Decoenthusiast, I agree, however, we listed our house, expecting it to sit a while and it sold in 2 days. Our rental has fallen through and our timeframe for remaining in the area lengthened longer than anticipated. We have a trusted contractor who can supposedly do it all in 2 months (fingers crossed!!!!). If this falls through, we have no where to go :( Thank you all so much!! p.s. what do you think about the little porch area? can anything be done to enhance/change the railing....See MoreHow to give this house more curb appeal on a budget?
Comments (4)It looks like your roof is brown? In that case, any warm color will do - probably not blue or gray. I say probably because there may be certain shades of blue or gray that would work if you're really interested in them. Do you like light colors or dark colors? Any colors you particularly like or dislike? As Patricia says, it also helps if we know what style you like. While the house in this picture isn't the same style as yours, it is an example of a slightly different body color than what you have now (without the yellow hue) and lighter trim....See MoreAirillusion
