I just ordered my first Oncidiums
Comments (2)Congratulations on your purchases and your taking the step 'forwards' in your growing. Forwards is in quotes because for someone in NJ and, more likely than not, growing indoors Phal's themselves are hardly beginner plants. This is just one of the many myths that abound in our hobby. An orchid only becomes 'easy' when the conditions it needs to thrive can be presented to it without effort on the part of the grower. This is only the case in the North Eastern United States for a narrow band of season in mid-summer or rare and lucky circumstances of architectural design. Anyway, about your Oncids. Being very, very general about it. Species Oncid's are rather difficult, hybrid Oncid's like your Sharry Baby are rather easy. Do they require more light than phals. Technically, yes. Practically? Well, you might very well already be giving your phals light that would make the Oncids happy. It's not likely, but my point is that terms like 'more' or 'less' cannot be applied until you know what you actually have. How well do the phals grow? Have you seen an inch of growth on new leaves per month? If no, then not even your phals have phal light and they too need more light and while you are at it if you get enough for the Oncid's it won't be too much for the phals, all will benefit. If OTOH the phals are growing well and you put the oncids with them but the oncids simply sit there week after week looking just the same as when you bought them then obviously the light won't do for them, the choice is yours at that point whether to create somewhere for the oncids to thrive in or upgrade conditions for everyone. There is an orchid species website www.orchidpsecies.com where you can look up requirements for the O. orni___. The Sharry Baby being a mutt will be more general in its culture suffice it to say that it could be grown with a phal if that phal were receiving 16hr/dy mixed sunlight and artificial light. Ideally they would want things just a tick cooler than most phals but I think there is an overlap in there somewhere. Good luck. H...See MoreMy Kumquat from Four Winds is HERE!!!!!!!!!!
Comments (7)Hi MIKE!!! yeah, I do realize this is not the exact gritty mix, but I have to make due with it since that bark is the only one I have on hand. I know!!! This tree is super big. I got a little citrus from logees too....that is BEFORE i found out there is four winds (I should have done more research!!!). However, it is still a expensive for a poor college student (but I have to have some "splurging" on my hobby occasionally? I study study study in med school, gotto have a hobby to relax!). Do you think my citrus, from the sound of it so far, will survive what I did to it (even with the bigger bark pieces)? I bet there is going to be a lot of leaf drop...sadness...I will post pictures every couple of days and let everyone keep an eye on it? So we can rescue at the first sign I am doing something wrong? I did cut off the little fruit, and all the little flower buds to conserve energy...hopefully it won't take too long to recover. I DO usually fertilize with foliage pro (have been reading Al's thread since 2 years ago when I switched to gritty mix), so I don't use calcium/gypsum/epsom salt. I water everything (not this citrus yet of course) every single time with half the recommended concentration of FP (plus about a tablespoon of vinegar every other time just b/c I live in an area with hard water). I will keep posting progress. Please help me watch this plant! Thank you so much! Ruby p.s I do water it every other day right now even if the soil is moist right? since it is a newly transplanted/barerooted plant?...See MoreNew to daylilies, ordered my first four
Comments (7)To be frank, Kay, I was irritated enough by the invasive request that I deleted it right off, but I vaguely recall that they wanted a scanned copy of a utility bill, or something of that sort, to prove that a) I was who I said I was and b) I live where I said I live. I can totally get behind wanting to make sure that lily auction sellers aren't getting ripped off, but I'm not sending that sort of thing to anyone. I'm glad to get into daylilies, though. They're such cheerful flowers - and are way less likely to die than anything else I'm planting! Comments (14)Pip The New Zealand lemonade tree yo gave me is doing well. There is physically not enough room in our house for even one citrus tree and all of them will go in ground permanently this spring. My greenhouse setup can go all winter without heat as long as the temps stay above 0 F. I used low-E double glass sealed window and top coated it with clear bubble wrap. It holds heat much better on clear nights and doesn't cook the plants on surprise 70 F sunny days. It appears to be the way to go in GH's 6b Steve...See MoreHalyna (Central FL, 9a)
