Thanks, Carrie. I also think they can handle temps below freezing. They are good, sturdy plants, about a foot tall and I don't think the nursery covers them or puts them inside at night. I suspect that if they had been planted last fall, they would be up by now and tolerating any cold weather we might still get. Just needed another opinion and think I will plant them tomorrow.

i would track down a few stems ... and see where i would find dormant .. tiny.. buds where a leaf attaches to the stem ... and i would cut above the second one ... which might mean.. i would cut them down to around 6 to 8 inches ... if you do it your way.. at 24.. they will grow 6 more inches.. and flop again.. in the next storm ... if you fert'd them this year.. consider that you caused excessive height.. and just dont fert them next year... or ever again ... i looks like you have some nice soil there... so you would not need to fert them ... since you have a few there [i think]... try one your way... and one my way.. and learn by experience ... it would be cool if you did that.. and reported back in 4 or 6 weeks ... another way to cut backs its vigor.. would be to split the plant.. in fall ... or very early next spring .... ken

I have mixed luck with coral bells in my shadier beds, but that's an idea that hadn't crossed my mind--probably because I haven't fully accepted that my "sunny" bed is still part shade! Overall, I am just so confused with the parts of my garden that aren't obviously shady all day. I'm growing shade and part-shade plants in sites that remain dappled through the summer, but I'm finding the sunnier sites much more difficult to plan for. I have been eyeing a part of the lawn that I thought was sunnier, but it seems to be sunny only till early afternoon. I thought that part-shade plants wouldn't do well there, but am rethinking my planting strategy based on the mixed results of the bed I describe above. Right now the sunniest site seems to lie on the north side of my house--something I didn't expect, though if I think about it, my 'north garden" gets what to my neighbor is southern light.
