My experience with a Nest & Ecobee smart wifi thermostat
Comments (28)One of my thermostats recently died after 10yrs so I started looking for a "smart" thermostat. After browsing the web I concluded I'd try the Nest (crowd fav) and the Ecobee3 (newest model but ecobee seems to have a very good reputation online). I wanted to share some of my initial thoughts between the two since there isn't much out there yet. Before buying these stats I realized I needed the 24v common wire connected and luckily our house was wired with 6 strand wire and all I had to do was hook up the 5th wire to the C terminal. This made life easy for me. I bought the Nest from Lowe's so I had that immediately. The Ecobee3 was bought direct a week later and it was 2 day shipping. The Nest had more heft and solid feel. It felt like it was worth the $250 whereas the Ecobee3 is very lightweight plasticy cheap feeling like my existing stat was. It was a bit hard to believe it was more then the Nest. I did have some cosmetic damage on my Ecobee3 and am in the process of exchanging the unit with them. Installation was similar on both. I had 5 wires and both units started right up after I turned the power back on. Ecobee3 has more initial questions than the Nest if I remember correctly. Once setup the Ecobee3 definitely has more things configurable for your HVAC system vs the Nest. The Nest app is smoother to operate. Ecobee3 app is a little clunky but has more settings to customize. Ecobee3 doesn't show the energy savings/usage yet but it says that feature is coming soon. The one thing that really interested me was the remote sensor on the Ecobee3. This stat is on our 2nd floor. We primarily occupy 2 bedrooms and if this thing can average the two rooms to better even out the temperature that would be great. We have tried adjusting the vents but there is still quite a bit of difference. Its a bad time to review these stats right now because my HVAC system isn't really running much. Just a tad at night to keep the house warm. I've decided to keep the Ecobee3 and return the Nest based on the more configurable settings and the remote sensor with comfort in mind....See MoreLooking for an iPhone app to make shopping lists with different stores
Comments (10)Do you mean store specific? Or that has icons for all the items? If you just mean written lists, any app that allows you to have several lists open at once would work, even the built in Notes app (that's what I mostly use). In Notes, create a note for each store and select that note to add an item to the list. If you want something of the sort, but more powerful, look under Productivity and Organization. Maybe something like Listaway or Evernote. The basic Reminders app lets you share your lists through the cloud. If you want to share lists with a partner, AnyList is a good choice. I'm pretty sure it allows multiple lists, but I think you could also use customized subheaders for the different stores. I haven't looked at it recently. It has organization by department within a list, with autofile, and does some high level tricks like recipe import. "Groceries" app is a little clunkier, but for sure does multiple lists, and has autofile and autocomplete, but I don't know if those will work on the hardware, et al. Pushpins includes offers from major stores. I used to have a great app for this that was for entertaining, but I can't remember the name, and I don't have my phone to look it up. There are errands managers. Errands To-Do List would work, but I think it's clunky, and I'd rather just use Notes, but it's the best one I've seen in this category. Some of the above also let you scan bar codes, but I find spelling it out is easier. I got Amazon Echo when it was first out to see if my folks would like it. It's not all that useful, really, but what I like enough to keep using it is that it has a shopping list function. You can be up to your elbows cooking, and tell it to put something on the shopping list. The list can be accessed from your phone or tablet (Fire or Apple, I think). It's just one list, but like having a kid around to write it down. :) It will also read back the list. :)...See MoreHow/where do I add OxiClean to my TOP-loading, HE washing machine?
Comments (38)Your Oxi product pictured is a powder, yes? As stated in responses above several years ago, the instruction is based on an assumption of liquid detergent and powder oxi ... which combined can form a chunky/goopy mixture that won't properly dissolve and flush out of the dispenser drawer or cup. Don't combine any liquids and powders together in a dispenser cup/reservoir that holds the dosage for the dispenser to be flushed with water. A frontloader detergent dispenser (and some toploaders with a drawer dispenser) typically has a reservoir cup or a dam piece that holds liquids from running out prematurely, until the incoming water flow overflows the compartment and flushes out the product, then (usually) a siphon tube drains the residual water. The cup or dam is removed for powders since they won't run out the back, the powder sits in the compartment until the water flow flushes it out (overflowing the cup or hold-back dam). A heavier goopy combination of liquid+powder sitting in the cup or blocked by the dam doesn't flush and/or dissolve readily. If you're using liquid detergent and powder oxi (or powder detergent and liquid oxi), then do not mix them together in your frontloader's dispenser. Liquid detergent and liquid oxi, or powder detergent and powder oxi (with the reservoir cup or hold-back dam removed) can be mixed together. If you're not sure, then follow the oxi directions and place liquid or powder detergent alone into the dispenser, and liquid or powder oxi directly into the drum....See MoreDo you have a big screen TV? And cable television?
Comments (63)Do you use it frequently? We use ours daily. We wake up to the news and I come home for lunch M-F and tune into shows during that time. We also watch TV at night, especially before bed. Do you spend the big bucks on cable for the TV and not watch it very often? Yes, and I feel ripped off with Directv. Also do you fight over it with your SO? No. We have multiple TVs so if we disagree on a show then I just watch in a different room. Our house isn't that big and it's just me and the hubby. We have a 54" in our living room and I don't consider that very big anymore. When we replace it someday we'll go to 65-70". Our living room is open to the kitchen and I have to squint to see the guide on my 54" so bigger is needed lol. In our bedroom I think we have a 46" ?? It's not very far from our bed so it's plenty big. And in the basement we have around a 50" but we never go down there. Our TVs are older but get the job done. It's so hard for me to spend money on an item when I have something that already works. So I just wait until things break. I'm down to my last working HDMI port on the living room TV so once that one goes then I'll cheerfully buy a new 65-70"......See Moremaggie200
