Your place is lovely. Themes are not my thing. When I see your well laid out place, I do find myself wishing you had a little more art on the walls and perhaps a nice oriental rug.

For art, the first place I would look is in your own photographs. Not of people, but places, things, artistic shots, travel pictures, any of these could be made bigger and turned into a lovely piece of art.

You could also do a series of shadow boxes displaying interesting things you might have picked up in nature or on travels. For this to work you need to be able to have a series of similar things and consider painting the inside of the box you use an interesting color to highlight the object. You can get plain wooden boxes from Ikea to hang on a wall like a shadow box.

Consider using maps of places that are important to you and framing another series. Again, IKEA is your friend for picture frames. And painting them is a piece of cake, so don't shy away from that. Remember you need a little more color.

Then you can look at Minted for art. They have very reasonable prices and a wide array choices.

Consider getting an oriental rug. They are not very popular right now, so there are great deals to be had. I would look for something very traditional with whichever colors you like. And lastly, get some pretty pillow for the sofa. Look for some color and texture.

Keep in mind art need not match or go with any decor. Art stands alone. For everything else, think about what colors you like and then weave the color scheme through the textiles you choose, the frames for the pictures, the curtains or shades you may buy. Pattern can easily be mixed, you just have to be thoughtful about scale.

You will get lots of help here. People are talented and generous. Be confident in your own taste- it is clearly good. You will be fine. Do bring your personality out more in the house.

this room has similar windows to yours. look at how nice the darker paint color on the wall sets them off. Perhaps you could do just the living room area walls a darker shade.

you really need to get a media console for under the tv. if you can't afford to buy a new one, look on craigslist or yard sales for a vintage credenza, buffet or dresser, and paint it white. (or if in good shape, and walnut, leave it natural), see how this one is pictured? :

and then look at how they have those white drapes. that will make that part of your room look fine.

your pillow are sad. can anyone sew? if not, just get some pillow covers for the ones your have. the cost is 10-15 bucks. or spring for some new, colorful pillows.

get a tall plant to put in the corner near your desk. you need some life. to the left of it, look at garage sales or craigslist for a larger book shelf. Paint it a glossy white or whatever color you have in there as an accent. Learn how to DIY

better yet, you have the perfect little nook area for a built in desk/shelving. this is super easy to build, would look great, and offer you way more storage as a work space area. just look up, "built in desk nook' or 'built in desk area'.

you could even find a second hand desk, paint it, and build shelving around it.

The dining room needs a large piece of art in place of where the mirror is. find a canvas art piece (or paint your own) that you like that eats up a good portion of that wall. put the mirror somewhere else.

as of right now, you have no life or movement in your rooms, and very little color. look at pictures of rooms you like and see what you can use in your own rooms.

I would get a console piece of furniture to go under the TV. Do not buy used furniture, you don't know where it's been or what you might be introducing into your home. And then remove the mirror in the dining room and hang a piece of art there. Then I would get some throw pillows for the couch and a large faux tree next to the windows to bring some "life" into the space. Get a couple of decorative objects for the coffee table.

What a nice home you have. What catches my eye is there is no real color or personal touches. You have some good advice here on how to add that so I won't repeat any of that advice.

Since shutters are such a statement already, I would recommend going with extra fullness for the draperies to be in tune with the 'weight'.

Of course you can buy used furniture, what an absurd comment above!!

The type of used furniture you need to be careful about is used upholstered furniture, mattresses, etc. They can have bed bugs, and the kinds of stains you don't want to know about.

(When you are at that stage, you also want to be careful about used baby things like cribs and car seats because of safety standards and product recalls, you don't want to be using something that has now been found to be totally unsafe!)

Tables, chairs, consoles, credenzas, shelves, lamps, plant pots, pictures, frames, mirrors, curtains that can be laundered or sent to the dry cleaners, rugs that be sent to a special rug place for cleaning, all that can be purchased used.

You can certainly re-finish or paint anything that has good bones, or pay someone to paint. You can ask in the smaller auto-body places to paint pieces of furniture, you can get good prices there with marvelous finishes that just shine in any color you like.
