Need a style for a living room
We just moved in into a new house and struggling with figuring out what to do with the living room. It has two focal points - TV and the fireplace, so placement and style of the couches is a challenge. These two pictures are from the previous owners. I think the position of the couches is optimal (we have 2 children who would be spending a lot of time on the couches watching TV, so they need to be big and/or family-friendly), but I wonder if there's a better way to arrange lounging/sitting for at least 4 people without blocking the flow. We prefer sectionals and couches, and not individual chairs (kids like to snuggle), and the TV is non-negotiable :-)
The dining room can go. Not a big fan of the green on the walls nor the furniture. We are going more for a coastal/airy feel, and the green feels heavy.
Another consideration is the hutch (shown in a different space). It has sentimental value and has to find space in the living/dining room. It's more representative of my aesthetic anyway.
Any suggestions?

Comments (6)The rug looks fine to me, more like a problem with the lighting. What does it look like when you open the blinds? Those slats will always filter out a lot of light. If budget is a concern, or even if it isn't, I'd get an IKEA Vitsjo coffee table and spray paint it with a slightly coppery brass. Comments (85)I think you can use a large armoire on that wall to store games/books. With your ceiling height, you need a taller piece like that. It would look especially nice once you have a longer, lower console, but you could keep the one you have for now. The vertical art piece is nice also, but wait to hang it until you know what your furniture arrangement will be. Comments (3)Beautiful room and hardwood! The media/TV stand should not be placed in the corner shown in picture #3. The space is too tight and too out of the way for a TV there to make sense. That space would be a great spot for large art or a family photo gallery, though. The media/TV should go where your couch is now. The couch should be placed to have it's back to the foyer with a sofa table behind it. You could then place a couple of side chairs with their backs to the window and an end table in between. Another end table could go on the opposite end of the couch. Pick a generous sized rug, at least a 9'x12' if not a bit larger to allow at least the front legs of all furniture (except the sofa table) to be on the rug. I would place the TV opposite the FP
I would turn the and center it on the sliding door & add a chandelier
I would not use your cabinet hutch. It's not a quality piece that's worth keeping when you compare it to cabinets like you see below. You don't have to spend a lot of money, but those details on your cabinet are a bit 'cartoonish'.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoCoastal is typically done with the blues.... Do you want blues? There are other colors you can use. Your hutch can work as farmhouse, but also as BEACH COTTAGE. Do a different version of coastal- SAND & SUNSHINE & WHITE TIDAL POOLS...?.

Want to add charcoal, gray, tan, khaki? You can do that. Think of sea lions sunbathing on the gray rocks.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoKeep your yellow hutch on that one wall. Add yellow pillows to the seating area along with your other desired accent color (pale blue/ aqua?). It will pull the eye through the space and marry the two areas.
If you like framed seafans.... You could pay $$$$ at RH or DIY them.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSearching for the perfect rug that encompasses all of your colors is time consuming. If light & airy coastal is your scheme, then might I suggest a neutral rug with patterns found in seashells? Style your table or shelf with the large seashell.. shells:
