What's the most expensive houseplant you've ever seen ?
Comments (32)I'll chime in about the most expensive plant I saw. It's a good story, well, for me it is. Anyways, I have been into plants now for about 14 years, and have always loved tree-like succulents, such as jades and portulacarias. I don't have a big collection at all, but I cherish the ones I have. Ever since seeing a picture of a variegated jade, I knew I HAD to have one. Problem is, I saw this picture in 1999, and have never seen one of these jades in person, let alone for sale. Well, last summer, while browsing around in a large greenhouse that I've been to dozens of times, I decided to go past the tropicals and succulents, and browse around in the annual flower section, which I have no interest in. Upon walking WAY to the back of this large annual section, there in the bowels of the greenhouse sits a variegated jade. I was super exited, however, this jade was 7 feet tall, with a 12" diameter trunk, and had a price tag of $799.99. Obviously, this is too expensive, and also too big for my tastes. But, I asked if I could take a leaf to root my own plant, and the guy said "sure, but you would be better off with a stem cutting", and broke a small chunk off for me. Well, I rooted the cutting successfully, not that jades are a challenge, and this spring repotted it now that it has a vigorous root system. So, after all that babbling, I can sum it up like this: Not only did I find the most expensive plant I've ever seen, I got my variegated jade, and it only took 12 years! Comments (25)Bernd - I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on their similarities. :) My 'Frances Willamss' is young, yes, and was just emerging in the photo...but comparing photos of it and 'Twilight' there's a huge difference to me, not so much in the width of the margins but the color, form, texture, etc. 'Twilight' is of h. fortunei parentage and 'Frances Williams' is a sieboldiana. Maybe we're just looking at different types of subtle differences....See MoreThe Hosta most likely too ......
Comments (4)What a fun thread Leafwatcher :) I'll play. 1. Andrew - I bought two from a vendor before I had done any research about vendors. Needless to say I am not ordering from them again. I paid almost $12 a piece for two pathetic barely a year old tissure culture. They had a second flush of leaves, but stayed really small. This cultivar is new to the market and there is some speculation as to a bad TC batch with the first go around. I bought a third Andrew from Naylor to try a different vendor. I am hell bent on seeing this one to maturity, but I might be retired before it happens. 2. I am still too new to hosta gardening with my first year coming up to have any expectations about my hosta leaping. Patience . . . . . . 3. I guess I can future cast this one to reference the big move I have planned for Elegans. I will be combining my three clumps into one planting. Only time will tell if the operation was a success and she is happy in her new home. 4. Hahaaa . . . I ask myself this more with the bulbs I planted. All my hosta are in pots and all are with tags. I might have a problem though if the woodland critters decide white plastic is a choice toy for the season. I might be pitching a lot more no ID's if they steal my markers. 5. Open question: Will I actually plant any of them in the ground this year ? I still have a lot of beds to clear and prepare before I can plant. I went overboard with the ordering, but no regrets. They take so long to mature I figure I can hold them over and gain some growth while in the pots as I clear the beds in the coming years....See MoreMost expensive house in San Francisco
Comments (18)Lots of people have the same or similar views, including a friend of mine who has a condo near the Embarcadero. You get better views of the GG bridge from the upper Haight, where I lived for a while. I also lived near the top of Buena Vista Hill, but I prefer neighborhoods that are more walkable. Pacific Heights is not one of my favorite neighborhoods, but that's my personal preference. In fact, I do not really miss living in San Francisco any more, although I did greatly right after I moved. It was a difficult place to leave. You can get this condo in Malibu for $57M, but it is way over priced. I prefer the views from this house, listed at $80M (also way over priced, but very pretty), but you can find houses in Malibu Crest for under $40M, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods. I've only been to parties there, but the views to me are much more spectacular than the SF views, but again that is my preference. Also, the weather is much better in Malibu than SF....See MoreKari 4b Minneapolis
