Comments (24)Bill- Hosta, to paraphrase Ken from this forum ....will live on the driveway with little or no soil.. forever ...the only way to lose a hosta..is pay $100 for a rare one..and it will die on the way home.... In general, hosta grow very well with little help. They like some morning sun if they can it, grow well in light shade, but in deep shade most will struggle to thrive. Water is the one thing that seems to help the most for my zone 4 garden - leaves are bigger and more of them with regular water. Here is a pic of Gold Standard after years of ignoring and again after regular watering Check out the link below for hostaholic gardens from the 2010 American Hosta Society garden tours - quite a variety of garden styles. BTW, the 2011 tours will be in New England this June. They rotate and it will likely be 10 years before back to New England again. Bill, this is a very active forum, especially as things get a growing. Welcome. Paul ps Phil, sorry for highjacking your thread. Comments (26)The only ones I know of who nest communally are the purple martins. They like apartment living. Members of the swallow family, they come at a certain day every year, and leave on a certain day every fall. My brother has up three nest boxes like a condo 6 on each side for different nests, and they send out scouts early to claim the bird houses. Then the flock arrives and my brother HAS to be ready. The year after Katrina, when he was still putting his place back together, they arrived and flitted around impatiently waiting on him to raise the pole with the nest box on it. HA! They were going into the apartments while he was securing the pole! You might can have two different bird species nesting within 10 feet of one another, but never the same species. The wrens will throw the baby blue birds out of the nest box, and try to poach in the nest box. Most species need to have holes just the right size before they will move in. Also the right height from the bottom of the box. Love your bird houses. Very imaginative. If you have Carolina wrens (I doubt they go that far west and north), they will nest in flower pots and door wreaths...not particular at all. We've raised two families of them two years running, in our Pig flower pot sitting on the deck railing. We call them the Pig Family. "When Pigs Fly" is a real event around here....See Morehosta arrangement
Comments (8)Wow, that's a huge arrangement - looks great! I learned, at the Ontario Hosta Society meeting last Saturday, that the hosta leaves "breathe" through stomata on their undersides / backs - so when conditioning in water (3 or 4 days) it is important that they be face down so that the undersides are still exposed to the air...just in case you decide to do it again next year....See MoreMove my zone 3 hasta in January to Arizona
Comments (2)Dig and divide them now and pot in containers. Store them over winter or until you move in a garage or somewhere that stays nice and cold but does not get much below freezing. I really have a hard time imagining hostas doing well in AZ but I guess it might be possible with enough shade and plenty of water..............See Morepopmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
