Please offer ideas on decorating my living room

Just finished painting our living room and new wood floors are coming next week. Since the room is the first thing you see from the front door, I need to make it inviting. I thought about arranging a sitting area in the center of the room but it will obstruct the path to the lanai and adjacent rooms. Any suggestions on what to do here is greatly appreciated.

I have same issue with my living room - it has to have a pathway to sunroom and deck. I put sofa, two chairs, and coffee table on left. Then wide space and console on right. My console has tv but yours could be just a console table with lamp and art. If you put a rug under just sofa and chairs and left floor bear in front of console, it would visually re-enforce concept of seating area on left, pathway on right.

It might help if you post a floor layout with dimensions.

My first inclination would be either two sofas facing each other (with a clear path to the lanai) or a sofa on the left wall with two chairs facing it on the right wall. Not squished up against the walls but running parallel and creating a conversational setting.

Thanks pricklypearcactus for your recommendation. You're right about providing the dimensions... the room is larger than it looks. My challenge with placing chairs facing the sofa is they'd be blocking the path to the lanai and entryway to the great room and kitchen on far right side. I may have to simply stick with a sofa. Dunno

Can you post a sketch of the floor plan with dimensions? That would be helpful. What is the opening over the sofa? Is that to the kitchen? Am I to understand correctly that you want a dining space as well as living space in this room? I think it's a grand space and can yield a fabulous room. I think those sofa's can stay and I love the rug.

Thank you all so so much for all of the helpful advice! I think I have an idea of what colors and layout I’m going to go with. After going back and forth with my husband and moving furniture around for days, I think we’ve decided to keep the original layout, but we tweeked it a bit. I’ve ordered 132 inch White draped with black rod for windows. A black and white floor lamp, and a large black and white canvas for the large wall. I know it may seem colorless, but I figure I can always change out pillows . I still think I can add some subtle natural wood elements here and there. Everything should be here in the next few weeks so I’ll post what I have at that point. I may need a few more ideas! Also, look out for a post soon on exterior paint color ideas. Room long enough for sofa way in front of patio doors, and 2 low-ish chairs?

If not an L shape - this on empty wall? adjusted to room size - people just have to walk around the furniture....

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I also looked up houses which are up for sale in my neighborhood to see how the furniture is arranged. This room is similar to mine except for the lanai area. I think the best option is sofa on the left wall for sure...

oh, i know you are not doing this for comment and forgive me for commenting. but have you thought of scrunching closer to tv and having open path run behind couch? then people won't be constantly running in front of tv?

Havingfun You make a good point but, since it is just me and the dog, I don't have to worry about others walking in front of me. Plus, the tv was a gift and it's gigantic! I don't mind sitting across the room! Thanks for suggestion however.
