Nyctinastic Blossoms?
Comments (12)"I rather like it." - jerijen "I love this trait--I find it to be incredibly charming." - annesfbay Me too! I've only observed this on one rose - Francis Dubreuil. He attempts to do it. And his effort is just another one of his endearments. This trait would work to great effect for contrasting petal reverses, wouldn't it? Would love to read reports of any and all others that do this....See MoreSingles are my new favorites.....(pics included)
Comments (29)A few days ago, I fell in love w/ a rose bush that I saw in someone's yard. I stopped and asked what it was, but they didn't know. It looked just like Ballerina except that the petals were a deeper pink, and most of the blooms had white towards the middle...and all had yellow stamens. The bush was about 5' tall and wide, with arching canes that were absolutely loaded with the beautiful single blooms. I got online and decided it was a Mozart, but now that I'm looking at these responses, the blooms like VERY much like Star Delight, Nearly Wild, and Basye's Purple (know this one is thornless though). The bush I saw was also nicely fragrant. Can anyone verify it's identity? I've already ordered a Mozart, and hope I didn't make a mistake....See MoreFavorite Five-Petaled Roses?
Comments (17)Melissa, "Single Red China" may be the same rose which is sold in England as "Bengal Fire." It's a very vigorous plant, and I do NOT think it is going to be small and compact. How about a red Polyantha? We have Lady Reading, which is red to me. It is fairly compact, disease-free here, and blooms to some extent all the time. R. minutifolia really has the MOST minute foliage, and very small blooms -- tho I am told the plant can gain some size. It is a desert plant, native to a very restricted area of Northern Baja CA/Extreme Southern San Diego Co., Southern CA. (The habitat is threatened by development.) Mel Hulse grows it well, and has propagated it. I don't think it is in general commerce. It definitely wants an arid environment, and it died here without much ado. Darnit. Jeri...See MoreRoses "M"
