Northstar Vinyl vs Anderson 400 series

New build looking for doublehung wash/tilt for easy cleaning and black on black. Located in Michigan. Would like them to be as air tight as possible. Builder has currently priced out Anderson 400 series. Recommended Northstar vinyl as a lower cost alternative. 10-12k savings. Opinions please:)

You might consider Marvin Integrity. For me they came out as the same price as Andersen 400.

+1. The Integrity has a black on black option that is worth looking at.

I assume you have an Andersen product guide and have looked in there for info' on the tilt-wash windows. Fibrex sills vs. PVC covered wood; fancier weather stripping; Low-E4 (0.32 U-Factor) vs. regular (0.47 U-Factor) glass - from the 2008 book - but maybe things have changed for 2009? I don't have much more to offer - I have an older, 200 series and just installed a newer, 400 series awning window and then seem to be pretty much the same except for the glass.

For a 32x62 the 400 would cost approximately $525, to vinyl wrap the interior would add about $10 and to paint would add about $25. The 100 would be about $425 for white on white. Savings would be about $2600- $3500, weather this cost is minimal would be mostly opinion. The 100 looks cleaner more modern in the inside , the 400 looks cleaner on the outside and less modern. The 100 has 2 layers of weatherstripping vs 1 on the 400 with exception another layer at the head. The hardware is different and hard to compare.The. U-values are about the same and I believe the 100 is tighter in air infiltration. Everything is based upon a visual inspection and pricing at Home Depot. If going with white interior I would seriously consider a nice vinyl window.

I would be surprised to see the 400 Series TW have more air infiltration than almost any other tilting window. It has a jambliner that actively pushes against the sash, vs relying on passive weatherstrip for the sash to slide along. In fact, that is a selling point of the TW for me. Being on the service side of it for the past 15+ years, I really appreciate a well-installed TW. The downside for me is less wood showing on the interior vs the vinyl jambliner.

Here is what my contract says: General Structural Framing: • Lumber: 2x4 interior and 2x6 (where specified) interior walls as noted and exterior walls 24" on center unless otherwise noted. Use of treated lumber where required by code for posts, joists, bands within proximity to concrete or ground. Sill on sill seal and continue termite flashing. Penetrations sealed at floor, bottom/top plates, etc. Joints sealed in band joist. • Sill plate at new addition: 2 x 6 pressure-treated pine. • Floor joists, Microlams/LVLs, engineered trusses and roof rafters per agreed upon construction drawings. • Steel Beams (varying sizes) Steel Pipe Columns

Thank you! I have them pricing out the Marvin windows. I was really happy with the look of them in both a casement and a double hung. I was also made aware of a manufacturer out of Canada called Solaris. It’s a high end vinyl. Any feedback on those? Any other suggestions other than Marvin or Anderson. We have 46 openings. The price for Anderson 400 casements for every window came in at $37,000. NorthStar Vinyl which I did not like came in at $24,000. The black on the NS has this textured look rather than a smooth finish. It really cheapens the window IMO. Looking for a third option to consider? Also, thinking of doing casements in the front with double hungs elsewhere. I failed to asked what the Anderson double hung would be do they make a 400 or do double hungs only come in the 200 series. Thank you for any feedback?
